I was inspired by early niteenth century architect and visonary Antonio Sant’Elia, how was a member of the italian futuristic mouvement.
erm the design is ok, but the use of polygons is tres bad, its always very unefficient to use meshsmoothing, way too many polys in some areas, and way too few in others
Nope, game engines can’t handle thousands and thousands of polys. Mesh-smoothing just does the job of adding thousands more polys to your model so you don’t have to.
Typically, you only need to use as many polys as needed to accomplish a specific form or shape (this can be more or less dictated by the 3d engine of choice in conjunction with game design of choice.) Games like Project Gotham Racing is focused on cars. Therefore, it is ok to have higher poly cars, since this is the focus of attention (the backgrounds are not as detailed as the cars… good lighting and shaders make up for this more or less).
Conversly, in a realtime RTS (real time strategy), charactrers cannot have the amount of polygons as say a detailed one on one fighter like DAO (Dead Or Alive). So it is all about balance.
In the case of your model, you have alot of extra edge looping that could be better spent on other details. Therefore, I would recommend starting very lowpoly. So for example, make a hood of a car boxy looking with minimal segments to start out the rough shape. Then add 1 set of edge loops and pull/push them to help form curvatures. Keep doing this until you have a fairly representive shape / form without overkilling it. This is basically my workflow. You will find that in the end, your object will be cleaner, lighter on polys overall, and have those polygons spread out over more sub-details on the object.
Overall though… you made that vehicle fairly quickly! Keep at it!
