Tesla Man

Crackles with electric energy and shoots lightning bolts along the ground. (i may change this)

   weakness: Water

Here are some Concept sketches to show what i’ve got in mind. (Crits ALWAYS welcome)

got the front view finished. drew one side and mirrored in PS… cause i don’t have access to a light table and i want it to be mirrored exactly (though i will be modeling the spike and backpack separately and attaching them later)

here’s some reworking of the backpack, decided to give it a more accurate feel with regards to an actual tesla coil… this may change some of the attacks he’s got which means i will want to save about 50-100 tris for the effects (though the limit is high enough that i don’t think that will be a problem)

just have to do the side view and it’s on to MAX for the modeling. i’ll post a WIP thread link when the WIP gets going.

I’m liking this one. The proportions and everything are very pleasing and he certainly makes me think of the designs from Megaman. Good stuff so far. Have you decided on a color scheme yet?

#4

Thank you, i’m not certain quite yet, but i know i want the lightning effect to be bluish white… other than that, aside from preventing a clashing colour scheme, i’m still unsure.

what would you suggest?

#5

Well, lightning guys are usually a sort of blue or yellow in games, if memory serves. You could mix it up a bit and go with something green, or maybe even black with white highlights.

#6

looking good man. i think you couls pull in a little more tessla though. how about making the horn/antennae longer and turning them into a jacob’s ladder?

Hey there, been a little slow going, i’ll admit it, i’ve been a little distracted as of late :stuck_out_tongue:

finally jumped into MAX with this sucker, i’m going to try and get the body without most of the armour plates modeled so that i can make sure that the armour that should stay rigid stays rigid when rigging (i’ve not researched other methods which could be more efficient)

total count is 840 tri’s so far (1012 with the chestplate), i know it needs some more massaging of the flow and such, but since this is technically my first foray into low poly character modeling, i’m kinda guessing that some parts should flow and some should hold the outline.

Crits and such welcome. (also, i’m not sure that i’m keen on the Jacob;s ladder idea, i’ll give it a shot when i start modeling the details)

edited the smoothing groups and added the start of the chest plate. i think it’s looking better than the other picture i had up here, as well as the spec so it doesn’t look so blah and flat :P)

[left]Update for the end of the day. hand, spike, coil backpack and cord connecting the last two done. only thing left are the horns, electric socket and the feet/boots.

Total Tris = 2,572

also added a little detail on the shoulders, didn’t plan for it in the concepts but i’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out. it would make an excellent accent in the colours when it’s all textured.

as always, crits welcome.

The model’s looking good so far. You should probably refine the head a bit more, but I realize you’re just starting it. It’s a good, solid start. Please, please go crazy with the details on this one. The details are really going to make this guy, so add more stuff like you did on the shoulders.

#10

it’s looking good so far can’t wait to see it finished.

have you given any idea into the colours you
will be using

true true, i do have a lot of detail that i want to add, most of it i can add with the normal map (going to model it directly and project it down… i’m not quite that good with Z-Brush quite yet to paint it directly… and i think it would actually be easier to model in the high detail since a lot of it will be rigid and mechanical.)

the head i will agree with you. i am not happy with how it turned out but i was on a roll with the modeling for today. i’m debating wether to add a mouth or something… it would make rigging even more challenging and i could use some of the (many many) poly’s left over so far to make it more groovy.

as for the colour scheme, i’m thinking that i’ll go with the yellow and blue that was suggested but maybe adding some copper (wires) for detail in a bunch of spots. i’m also wondering if i should maybe make the lightning yellowish white… it would definately match the scheme that way (and not make it look too blue to boot)

Thank you for the comments and the good suggestions. i hope the end result pleases

Going nicely till now, my only crit adding to the ones already mentioned above would be that… U can give some more poly’s around the weapon in his arm, to give it more roundness feel to it… one can easily notice a bit too many hard edges when compared with the over all model. Maybe you want to save polys rite now… but do add the extra polys in that area…

Best of luck

awesome crits all, thank you for the feedback.

i’m toying with some ideas on some extra detail and rearranging some things maybe (i may actually try that jacob’s ladder idea, though what i have in mind isn’t all that big… i do want the focus to go to the tesla coil bulb on the backpack) … i’ve added more detail to the weapon (it looks a lot smoother at this point) so that i can get the lowpoly base ready for when i start the high poly for the normal map. barring time constraints, i may forgo the normal map for the final deadline (depending on where i am and how much time i have available to me)

sadly, however, i’ve been working recently (well, not sadly really since i won’t have to rely on savings to live now :P) so my progress hasn’t been as quick as i would like it to be.

i’ll definately be back in the swing of things… trying to make at least a few hours a day to this. i don’t want to promise that i’ll have it done by the due date to the level that i want it but i’m still going to finish it (some interesting rigging solutions are coming to mind for some of the parts)

again, thank you for the comments, they are appreciated and knowing that some people are following this thread makes me want to keep gong even more so :stuck_out_tongue: gotta keep y’all satisfied, eh? chuckles

Progress picture (not much aside from refining the face and the weapon)

the model is coming along great so Keep it up, but I would like to see the color scheme for him because the model is a start but color could sell this guy so let us know.
