UGAC - Megaman - GumBall MAN!!!

Well, I was looking at someone else’s design and the perfect boss came to mind, GumBall Man!!! We have a ton of time left on this contest so I think I can get it done inbetween my other stuff. Plus do you think our heor Mega Man acan withstand hundreds of gumballs being tossed about the ground? I didn’t think so!

 Anyway, I'll post some drawrings later on! :)

Here are two orthographic sketches of my final Design for Gumball Man! I would love any sugestions, otherwise I’m onto coloring and then modeling, or maybe both at the same time! :slight_smile:

Edit 3 for quick reference (10/5) : Ok, I am pretty much done with the model here, only maybe minor tweaks here and there (or anything else feedback brings to light). i probably wont update again till Sunday or Monday, by then i should have it rigged and at the least the UV’s laid out. I am going for the “classic” look of the Mega Man universe here so no crazy details with the textues. Anyway, here is what he’s turned out to look like. The Gumball texture IS IN NO WAY FINAL, its just a quick mock up to make sure people know he’s supposed to be a gumball machine robot! :stuck_out_tongue: Please feel free to leave feedback!

Yeah, it worked, had to croppart of it off though, il upload a final design tomorrow, should have the model done by Wednesday.

Oh yeah here is a little background on the character:

Gunball man uses his large mass and high weight to come from above and deliver devistating butt stomps. When he lands gumballs fall out everywehre creating a slippery surface similar to that of ice. Once defeated Mega Man obtains the GumBall Blaster which can be used to fire a shotgun like blast of gumballs which will cause the local ground area to be littered with tiny gumballs which roll away from Mega Man and cause the enemies to roll with them, or slip and fall (it depends on what enemy it is). In classic Mega Man form, this weapon can be used against “Jet Man” who is the gaurdian of AirBase. Mega Man can use the gumball blaster against him to cause him to fall off of the platforms he fights Jet Man, atop of, resualting in Jet Man taking damgae when he falls.

this is a cool idea i hope you can pull it off. what about one of those huge gumballs for a secondary fire? just and idea.

And the one weapon for which he is no match belongs to none other than MouthMan! :smiley:

Pretty interesting concept. I hope you can finish on time! (Estimate based solely on my extensive experience with procrastination).

ThanX folks! I am pretty confident in the model, and I have been going over in my head on how to rig him. Im gonna make the two ball halvs seperate to the body and skin the legs and upper body seperately. Then I will attach the top ball to the upper root joint and the lower section of the ball to the lower root joint. I also am thinking that the model will weigh in at around 2k - 2.5k polys. I’ll UV and texture the lower res one and then do a proxy smooth to create a high res one and add detail where needed to keep it looking good, at that point I may use one 1024x1024 color, bump and spec map for it to make it rendder nicely. We will see though! :slight_smile:

Edit: Actually i may parent the upper an dloweer skinned sections to the ball so that when it opens and closses the uper and lower body are affected by it, although there are several ways to go about it, I 've jsut recently started doing rigs and they are not as unfun as I thought they would be!

Well, I have been playing around with the Surface Sampler in Maya and I think I know how to utilze the normal maps for my character. I’m gonna use them for the Head, arms and the stack of GumBalls inside Gumball man. I think I can create some nice details this way. For the head I plan on doing the construction lines betweent he hat and head, visor and eyes, and the ear do hickies. As For the Arms and chest I am going to use them for the little slotted thingy’s I have drawn on the things that wrap around him to keep his ball together. Then for the stack of gumballs them selves I am going to try and use them to create a nice stack of gumballs so it is deatiled but still Low poly. Again, I am going to go for between 2k and 2.5k for the ingame model! :slight_smile:

Well I’ve been having a heck of a time with this model here, bt I have gotten the way i want it now. I wanted the structure that keeps the ball together a seperate mesh so I spent part of the day (breaks and lunch) building this part of the model, I had to do it 3!! times!!! Anyways, like I said I finally go it. The model so far is a tad on the heavy side polygon wise, I think it will end up around 3k - 3500 poly for the in game model!

Oh no textures yet, only material shadding, I shoul dhave the model complete tomorow 4 sure and the UV’s laid out by Thursday night

Ok I spent about 2 hours on this tonight and have him done. Since we were allowed 8k i put a lot into him (kinda wastefull but :stuck_out_tongue: ) Anyways, I’m pretty happy with him there are a few things I need to fix and a detail or two I need to add still. What do you think , I would love some feedback! ThanX!!!

Edit: Oh yeah this heavy feller tops out at 5030 triangles right now :open_mouth:

Well, Ive added the hoses to his backpack and scaled it up a bit to make it a little more cartoony (exagerated). I also added the object to be used as my gumballs! :wink: I modified a spher and stuck it in there, although I suppose I could have just mapped this inside of the sphere i am using for his body alreday (its got an inside to it). I plan on at least getting the gumballs textured today,I’ll Upload another new pic when/if I can get it done!

the character design is pretty solid. I can’t wait to see how he looks textured. I think he is different enough from the character seforin mentioned, I wouldn’t worry about that. It definately looks like it’s a texture of gumballs on a sphere, I’m not sure if that is the best way to go about putting in the gumballs. It sounds like you have enough polys to spare to make the gumballs actual geometry (you would probably have to make them larger, if you still want them smallish then you could model a pile of them that only has the detail on the outside). though if you normal map the gumballs and use a more varied texture where the repeat is less noticeable, then it could work. it would look real fun when animated with all the gumballs bouncing around :slight_smile:

Well, I’m as done as I am going to get with ths guy! He ended up being 6272 polys and there are two 1024x1024 texture maps on him:

Here are a few images of him, he’s rigged alright but it would be a pian to animate him in his current state for sure:

Of course please do feel free to critique, I know the shoulder pads look funky, its how they are parented to the shoulder joints, I may go back and correct this issue later on but right now I have more pressing issues to deal with!

Edit: Oh yeah, he is REALLY poly heavy, I think I could chieve a similar look as this with around 3500, but again I haver other stuff to do, but please feel free to critique!

I can, did he not show up in the submission thread, I am just currious because I would have thught that I might have gotten at least one vote and I have the wireframes there, but I can of course post them here too if I need to! :slight_smile:

found one [link] from the submission thread [didn’t look wireframe since he was also grey shaded.

he is a cool concepts but doesn’t have much detail. the textures needed a little more detail like nuts and bolts and/or seems. i would of added some more color to. you picked red, pinkish, and grey which all seem to be around the same level of saturation. i would of used the pink as highlights and or small detail, added blue, and made the grey much darker so the red would stand out more. the gumball texture doesn’t really work. i would of love to see actual gumballs in him that move around when he does. and it would of been cool for him to regurgitate his own gumballs to throw them at Mega Man. also, you didn’t use all the polys you could of. i would of gone in and made some of his curves smoother and or fixed some smoother problem.

love the face, very angry but still robotic. i would of also liked to see this same concept done but with his head as the gumball jar [instead of his stomach …just for kicks].
