Here it is. 13,000 trianlges
UGAC-MasterChamber_broli4000
I saw your post in rules thread and that you created a new thread here. Maybe you are a bit confused. Just so you know your project hasn’t been submitted yet. The threads named like this:
UGAC - Master Chamber - Name
are for work in progress.
At some point soon a submission thread will be up. That is where you post your final images.
However I would strongly recommend working on your project more before you submit. You have a whole month left. First of all I don’t see what you say is 13,000 Tris. I’m not sure what the camera is not showing, but I think this can be done in less than half of that. Secondly your texture work has a long way to go.
In your final submission you should probably show different angles of your piece. There is not a whole lot going on in this frame that would make it very interesting. Just a couple pipes and some steps really. Keep this thread as a good WIP thread. You have a whole month. First draw up some sketches just to get them creative juices flowing. Post lots of images here. People will leave their feedback and they will have some good suggestions.
BTW, is this something you have been working on since before the competition began? In that case I think it would be an illegal entry. It just seems a bit bizarre that someone would create an enviornment the first 2 days of a competition and submit a final piece with over a month left.
Enjoy.
Judd’s right. This is long competition and while it’s neat that you banged this out so quickly, you really want to put more effort into it, and use up your whole polycount, etc. You could also do a lot more with the lighting to get more mood out of the scene.
No, he didn’t make this specifically for the competition. It says in the caption on his CGPortfolio that it was for a game art test for a company. I’m pretty sure this is not allowed, as far as I know.
Also, as stated above, besides not using enough of the poly budget, what you have there could probably be done in about a thousand polygons. The cups you have there have more polys in them than most complex game models, it seems! You say you’ve submitted to game companies, but it seems that you have a long way to go before your work looks professional. Keep up with the work! This challenge will help a lot, but a big part of being a professional is following directions. That’s very important here, so you should read the instructions before you post.
Good luck! If you put effort into this competition, it will really help you out.
Now while it is true that i started this before the competition, i did not read anywhere where it said that a started model could not be entered into the contest. As far as my poly count i am trying to make everything relatively hi-rez geometry to get rid of some of the “pixelation” that is common. I have smoothing turned on in lightwave, to take the low poly stuff that i have and make it a bit more manageable. So all in all im a bit confused on how i could do this whole thing in only 1000 tris.
Now i am relatively new at this whole thing, so feel free to crit and correct me where i need correction.
I would love to hear everyones opinions and maybe teach me how to do things the correct way.
the big thing most people are saying about not seeing where all the geometry is going is because you have a lot of planar surfaces that are probably using up geometry, and your pipes are probably much higher in geometry than they really need to be.
i took the ‘liberty’ of scrawling all over your image to show you a little of what people are talking about, and some possible suggestions of my own. take it for what it is: a stranger’s two grubby gum-stained cents, with one lopsided bite mark on one side.
I dont know if i’ll get it done in time with the way my job is treating me right now, but im changing ideas to do this new one. I think i got the reference from a project that had stalled a year or so ago, that i never really started on. I think that with the way that games are going now a days (urban and all) this will be a nice little fit. And at the very least it will help improve my texturing ability
Thanks again for all the help on the “other” image and feel free to continue to help on that.
well there is going to be more to the image. This is just some concept art that i had found on it. i will post more to it later. Just a starting point and a general feel.
Jeez man you are really harsh! Post in a positive way please. Like a “I think you should put in a bit more stuff. It kinda looks a bit plain the way it is now” That type of thing
thank you!
I was thinking the same thing. Little harsh… But you have to remember. Some cultures are different and don’t see it as being harsh. They are just telling you what they think.
Azeiku
Hey ive got a idea. leave the poor guy alone, he can do what he wants, to me his concept sketch looks like to pilars in a under ground trainstation. i actualy really like it.
IT HAS NOTHING TODO WITH CULTURES, what the hell is going on, im sure every culture understands being a dick head is being a dick head.
Back to “broli4000” Competion entry, quite fond of your sketch keep up the good work.
As “JuddWack” said. Im sure you cant use old work!
“AndrewRaZ” Did make a good point you could take the polycount to half that!
Good luck be checking here to see how your going
ASW
OK, well now its time to ignore the ignorant…
You are completely right, i could have done it in half the triangles, but i needed to bump up the poly count to meet the requirements and i just felt that that was the way to do it. (making pipes out of more sides than “really” neccesary, etc. etc.)
Thanks for the positive comments though, actually i am planning to make this an underground trainstation or quite posibly an underground club of sorts. still havent chosen yet, but i plan on making it a very moody piece to go with the feel of the posts
. Im kinda thinking doom 3 ish style of level and atmosphere but im not really sure quite yet. I’m still kinda floating ideas in my head. I really want to use this as an opportunity to get better at producing game art. I’ve been told that i can model well, but my other skills are lacking, which i would agree with
Hopefully i will be able to post some new stuff on here soon.
ok, after your last post, i don’t think your biggest problem is related to modeling or texturing at all. right now, you just have a vague idea of what you want, and as long as it’s vague, you’re never going to know what you’re really aiming for. scribble some stuff on paper, grab some markers, or do something in photoshop. not everyone is a great concept artist, i know i’m not, but getting that idea solidified is going to make your goal that much more attainable. if you have trouble drawing things from your imagination like i do, go into your modeling program and just slap down some basic shapes: planes for the floor/walls, etc, some basic prop shapes, etc. add some simple lighting, like two or three lights, and you’ll be able to see whether the idea is going to work, or whether you’re going to need to move things around more.
so long story short, get your idea down on paper (or pixels, or whatever) so that you know what you’re aiming for. i think that’ll help.
YEAH, im the same way. Its not that, but i just have so many ideas running around in my head im not sure what to do. Im really just indecisive…
Thanks thought, i am going to have to start doing that type of stuff.
are those characters or statues in the “2 pillars” image?
I still think you could take that area further and get a lot out of that sketch

The best thing to do if you don’t know what you want to do is go read a book/watch a movie/google stuff. Think about a theme, then a purpose for the room, and then sketch it out while looking at photos, video, games, whatever has rooms like it for inspiration. Once you have an idea sketch it up or block it out in your 3d program.
Never “bump up the poly count to meet the requirements” if it’s not going to add any detail. This is a big no no. Just make good use of whats in your scene and keep adding to it. By your description of what it “could” be how about a trash can? Maybe a few signs on the wall. An ash tray. Some lights hanging from the ceiling. A turnstile. A blanket shaped like a person is sleeping underneath. Just a few ideas that will sell the room a bit more.
ouch, that’s harsh. most of us have had it at some point or another (myself several times, i’ll not touch that brand again).
if you get back up and running before this is finished, feel free to throw something at us. otherwise, you know where we are for the next one!
Yeah Thanks All. If Not For My Work’s Computer, I Wouldnt Be Talking To You Guys Today. I Should Get It Up And Running Before The Deadline, But I Dont See Anything Getting Finished. I Will Still Post What I Can When I Can Though, And Thanks Again To All Those Who Helped With The Comments.
If Anyone Has Any Comments On What Brand Of External Hd I Should Get (im Using My Laptop For This) And Maybe Even A Good Deal, Let Me Know…
Peace Guys And Gals
