I would say keep it with the orginal megamen universe. But artistic stylizations can be done. You can make it more toon or realistic.

I can see people coming up with very cool ideas with this contest. Acid Men, Bulldozer Men, atom men, and so on…

If I may interject, I believe the second polycount seems a tad… well, high. After all, Half-Life 2 characters ran the gamut between 4500-6000 and look how good they look. Now consider the fact that we are, after all, doing Megaman Villains, well, let’s just say it’s a tad overkill. That’s just my opinion though.

Also, please, please PLEEEAAASSSEE don’t give the go ahead for a realistic approach. Megaman is defined by it’s cartoony style. And if you lose that, can the creation you design REALLY call itself a part of the Megaman Universe?

I, of course, point directly towards a recent travesty…

lol so true… I meant more on the texture than anything adding dents and stuff but keeping the form style pretty alike to the style.

Yeah, I can dig on that. I say this project is a go. Another short question…

Animations and explanations of abilities used and gained? It’s pretty much a given some form of animations are needed to display the design properly and I’ll be doing one regardless but should we make such a thing standard and, likewise, add beyond the traditional four weeks to accomplish this?

If I’m asking too many questions, just let me know. I’m really psyched about this one.

That is cool sheppyboy that your excited. Not sure about anyone but first lets get more comments give it like 4 days than we can see who will take over on posting contests and such.

Since we kind of have to reorgenize this thing a bit.

as for polys I wanted to keep it pretty open. that way we can get more people into the comp.

Plus I am not thinking of HL2 specs even though it is next gen. I am thinking second generation nextgen like gow and some other unreleased games.

As for animations. Well if you want to do animations and other stuff to present your work my guess is your always welcome. but the thing that should be judged is the model it self.

I think 1 month is more than enough for game comp of this nature.

What I was thinking of doing perhaps or suggesting is add a thread with updates of cool entrys on that one thread so you do not need to search all over to find the cool ones plus the link of the wip thread. Something for people who just want to browse through this comp can look at.

I reckon this is a real cool idea, ill probably have to sit this one out though, I cant for the life of me do Character design, no matter how much I try lol, so will be a shame, but it seems the logical step to create a character

Sheepyboy, I tend to agree with you that the poly count may be a tad high for the type of game the contest is shooting for. I know what RO is thinking with wanting next generational graphics on the par of GOW and what not, but those games are such that they require the high poly stuff. I’d say that for FPS, third person games, (and maybe a certain table tennis game :smiley: ) the specs would be right on par. However, since Mega Man games are traditionally sidescrollers and they don’t need quite the same caliber of graphics I think we should reel in the requirements a little. That’s just my two cents tho.

And as for the aformentioned travesty… WOW. Some character designer should be shot… then I could take his job. lol.

My personal vote would be for the higher specs, aiming for more along the lines of a UT2k7/GOW 8k-10k, then HL2 4k-6k, as HL2 is 2 years old and not exactly nextgen anymore, and since most of the folks participating in the contest are looking for something that will be fun and boost their portfolio, having higher specs is less restrictive and more likely to look impressive in someone’s portfolio.

As far as keeping the original look, it is possible to do a realistic version but maintain the style. Bomberman Angry Teenager Version is an aberration but it’s not the only possible outcome with adding realism to a piece. Looking at the Megaman characters, as the series progressed the characters got more complex and detailed, so I don’t think adding seams and nuts and bolts is going to ruin the style, but making them with realistic human proportions or the usual “realistic = covered in rust and dents and scratches and chipped paint and looks like it’s been beaten by large men with hammers for 12 years” look wouldn’t make it seem megaman-ish.

I would also either stick to original megaman style, or X style, but not both, because there is a unique style for each but not as much crossover between Regular and X.

I say stay with the regular megaman series megaman X is a little bit unkown to some.

I think the specs are fair. I know it is highish but I really think with a slightly higher poly count from the get go we will have less chances of complaints for it to be changed plus we are opening this contest to people who perhaps do higher poly models and want to give gaming art a try.

The megaman or megawomen villains have to be brand new. Concept written or drawn has to be done before starting to model.

I said 2 color 1024x1024 and 2 normals 1024x1024.

It would be kinda fun to have the specs as you say RO, but then also have a DS or PSP spec model to accompany it. :smiley:

It might be a lot of work, but it would be a good way to flex skills on both ends of the spectrum.

I think choosing just one (high end, or low end ds/psp) would be best. Otherwise it might just confuse people and add extra workload on top of that.

I think the contest should probably stick to just one of them for ease of judging. It’s hard to compare a DS spec model to a 360 spec model.
