UGAC - Master Chamber - Paleraven06

#1

K, guys. First time in a contest here so bare with me. Here’s the idea I’ve come up with for my Master Chamber:

The chamber will be the remnants of some long lost alien technology. The room would have been the hub for a larger system which would most likely strech across the rest of the level were I to develop it further. The style I’m going for is a sci-fi and naturalistic blend. Since the technology had long ago gone into disrepair, the inner workings would have spilled out and the room will be deteriorating and overgrown. I want to mix commonly seen plants and surfaces seen today with other-worldy features that would have mutated from contact with the alien substances. I could see the level in any sort of sci-fi or tech fantasy based FPS. The game that immediately jumps to my mind is Metroid. I think this would be a great boss level (or maybe mini-boss level depending on how far I can take it).

That’s my inspiration as of right now. There’s plenty of room to move about with the design choices since I’m doing a fusion of two styles, so I’ll just have to see how far the limits will allow me to go. Response and advice would be appreciated as I am a first-timer.

Making a long over-due update. Here are some concept sketches for how I expect the room to turn out and what kind of things I would like to implement. These are pretty quick and rough (I did them while waiting for some stuff to process at work  ) so I don’t expect this to be too indicitive on what the final scene will be.

(Concepts for the Power Generator / Center-piece of the room)

(Room slice with environment details)

And just FYI, I’ve also been working on the textures and I don’t see the limit being a problem by any means. However, I am used to working on a low-poly low-texture budget so I’m already geared towards that way of thinking.

I’ll get some test renders up as soon as it’s too a point I feel like the scene is worth posting. That’s all for now!

Despite being super busy with work, packing for a move to a new apartment, and friends
visiting, I still managed to get some work done.

Here’s a vector/color render of my scene. All the major components are in there. The power
core will be in the center and six auxiliary terminals surround it. Hopefully I will have enough
polygons left to cut into the ground and actually show the connecting cables. The catwalk
area is magnetically supported by the beams and the way the player would get up there
would be by walking over a jump panel (that’s what the three purple circle things are
supposed to represent. I’ve been toying around with the jump panel idea, but I might drop it
for a more traditional elevator device. There will also be a couple connecting corridors, but I
didn’t put them in the concept because I might just have them be textured into the walls.

A concept of the lighting. I decided to leave it in black and white tone because I haven’t
fully decided on a color palette for the scene yet. But it give you a general idea of the mood
I’m going for.

I also spent quite a bit of time testing ways of taking high-polygon objects and turning them
into bump maps. I’ve had some success with it so that’s probably the route I’m going to go
to meet the reqs but still have a nice scene. Just to show the kind of sci-fi-ish looking style
I’m going to be using I rendered a shot of what will become my wall texture. I’ll use the
geometry as a guide for setting up the bumps and for painting the actual texture.

So I’m pretty much finished with my 3D concept and now it’s just a matter of churning out
some textures and doing a bit of refining. I doubt that I’ll be spending much time with it until
I’m finished packing and moving, but I’ll update if anything interesting should be worked up
unexpectedly.

Well, I haven’t posted in awhile and there’s a reason for that… too damn busy!!! Or rather I can’t seem to make the time needed to work on this project. I highly doubt that I’m going to have the time between now and the end of the competition to put together anything worth submitting. Moving and getting settled was a giant pain and it took a larger chunk of my time and patience than I originally anticipated. Hopefully next time. Good luck to everyone! I’ve seen some great stuff already.

There is a vote in the Rules thread about extending the deadline by a week if it will help you complete this!
