Title: King Caitiff’s Aslyum
Genre: ~ Medieval Times
Description: The safe haven for a king.

Story:
You are known as a lengend and hero in your kingdom and kingdoms in your nation. Many people know you by the name of Königmörder, the King Killer.

Your King has just died of old age and his son, Rechtig, has taken control over the Kingdom. The neighboring king, King Caitiff, views the death of Rechtig’s father as a great opportunity to expand his kingdom’s evil domain. Your Kingdom is still in a state of grieving which makes it very vulnerable. Rechtig has always felt like a younger brother to as you and you’ve always planned on serving Rechtig with as much bravery and honor as you served his father. Rechtig came to you and asked you to assist and serve him in this great time of need. You vowed to carry out his request to kill King Caitiff.

King Caitiff is known as a coward and many believe that he killed both his older brother and father as they slept. He thrives on power and rules with a heavy, cruel hand. Since King Caitiff has become king, his kingdom has been at war and during battle, he has never shown his face to give his warriors strength and hope the need. This, you knew, was going to make your job more difficult. You have made your way through his castle, killing some of his best warriors and now you are deep into the mountain his castle stand upon. You feel that the surface is many leagues above and you haven’t seen th elight of day for hours. Lit only by your torch, the passage has been narrow, windy and full of henchmen. You have just slain his last line of defense and are ready to fulfill your vow as you enter his safe haven. Here, hiding like a coward behind his throne, awaits King Caitiff.

This is my idea so far. I have a couple concept drawings but I don’t have a scanner so I’ll just have to give some WIPs to show everyone what I’m doing.

Thanks for reading!

Here is an idea of what I want to do. I have the lighting almost how I want it. Of course some tweaking here and there but since I’m a newb this isn’t to bad for me. There are no textures yet so I have to add that for EVERYTHING. I also have to refine my models. They are just place holders right now. Architecturally, the room is almost how I want it but again, some tweaking necessary.

What do you think?

Hey, it looks like a good start, but I’m wondering if you have some concept art at all? Just to get a general idea of what you’d like to fill the level with.

I do have some concept art but it’s all on paper and I don’t have a scanner. I’ll try my digital camera and see if that works.

Thanks for your reply.

I’m going to have some time this weekend to work on things… more architectural stuff and get some textures made. Hopefully I’ll have more to show in a couple days.

Here are my concepts. I really suck at drawing so… I’m a newb so I’m trying to start small and go from there. This is the over layout of the room.

Sorry for the poor picture but I don’t have a scanner.

Here is a sketch of the statue. Well, or so I hope… heh. Again sorry for the piss poor quality. It’s hand drawn and taken with my digital camera.

So… any crits? I’m sure there are a ton. That’s why I’m here.

Hey, don’t worry about the quality of the images, if your able to get your ideas down on page, then replicate them in 3D, that is what matters. I can say this because I am in the same boat, my drawings arn’t brilliant, but I give it a go.

Having said that, you may want to fill in some space through out the level. Seeing as it is a kings chamber, I suggest some tapestries, in addition to the rather cool looking demon statues. You could also consider some ‘council’ areas that are worked up into the wall. Areas where members of the kings ‘trusted’ members sit and convene. You could also consider a second chair for a queen. Well, thats my 2 cents worth, and some food for thought.

I think you could add some more depth to your concept to make it more interesting. This is the final battle, right? Try and imagine yourself fighting there and come up with some elements that could make it more fun to fight the end boss there, better/worse positions to be in combat, lighting advantages/disadvantages, etc.

Excellent! Thanks guys for the ideas! I’m going to take a look at some of that as well!

I did some experimenting last night with textures and did a couple renders. Here’s one with just basic textures, basic models and basic lighting. I have to add things to the textures like bump and the like. But this was just for ideas to see what works.

What do you think?

Hey,

Nice job on the texture, they are looking good with that lighting. I do have a suggestion about the kings throne though, as you may want to make it look more regal and grand. Jump onto google and look up thrones from the medieval era. Even type in King Arthur and have a look at what comes up. I also had a thought about some other things that you could include to flesh out the design a little more. You could include some random junk, like goblets and plates, as the king doesn’t appear to show his face too often. It would also be cool to add some ornamental swords and shields with his kingdoms emblem on them. It would also be cool to include a secret escape behind his throne, as he is a coward and would always have a getaway plan ready.

Other than that, its looking good. Keep it up

Summo… Wow, thanks for your reply. Yeah, I do believe I need more in the scene. The funny thing is, I think I’m going to be pressed for time and won’t be able to add too much for this challenge. As for the throne and torches. They are meant to be temporary place holders until I put the better versions in. (Which I still have to make) Thanks for the tip on searching for King Arthur though. I did some searching before and couldn’t come up with much of anything. I’ll use your idea. Thanks!

Swords and shields are a good idea too.

Thank you for your comment!

Here’s a WIP for the statue in the corner. I need to add a pedestal as well but this is a start! It’s my first organic character I’ve tried to model.

Thanks in advance for any crits and comments!

Coming along nicely, keep it up !

There is a vote in the Rules thread right now about extending the contest deadline by a week, please vote if you think it will help you complete this on time!

#15

Thanks for the ‘heads up’ ! I definitely need more time.

Quick render of the gargoyle before he goes on a pedestal. I’ll be adding some detail to him too.

Thanks for looking!

Updates to gargoyle model. Currently 3720 tris.

Thanks for looking!

Torches have been updated sitting at about 970 tris on this. Two of these will go up by the throne, one on either side. Need to add flames. Textured and normal mapped.

Don’t think I’ll be getting this done by the deadline. Unexpected hosting of birthday parties for 5 year old nieces came up and lost more than a days worth of work. :frowning:

These are wires of the throne. Hopefully I can texture map this guy with a normal as well. 1364 tris

Thanks for looking!
