UGAC –Handheld Environment– 3rd Person Sneaker – Swizzle

#1

Name: Xavier Coelho-Kostolny
System: Nintendo DS Handheld
Genre: 3rd Person Sneaking/Stealth
Concept: Ancient Espionage - You are a spy and messenger for an ancient kingdom. You must infiltrate the ranks of the opposing army on its way to make war upon your country, taking troop positions and military secrets to your king and fooling the opposing generals into thinking you are one of their own. The fate of your country and your future hangs in the balance.

I think I’m going to try for a slightly fantastic approach to the aesthetic of the level - some sort of architecture a bit like you’d see in India, maybe. I think I might also be a masochist; this is something completely insane to even try with DS-type specs.

I’ll have concepts up later, probably tomorrow. I’m thinking that the level’s going to center around infiltrating a castle of some sort, but we’ll see.

sounds good. id love to see how this works out

man your the only other person willing to take on the mighty power of the DS, you better not back out on this one! these PSP boys must not be allowed to win, or come second, I want a DS top three:scream:

Don’t worry; I’ve been slowly knocking stuff out. I’ve just not been updating this thread because there’s nothing much to show yet. Once I really nail the aesthetic, I’m sure stuff’s going to fly. I’ll submit something if it kills me, and it may well do just that with how much homework I have and how many things I have going.

I’ll have something for you, and today might be the day I show it to you. I’m finding level design to be a pain in the rear.

Ok, I have something to show. This is just after a few hours of work and I’m basically blocking things in right now. None of this stuff is final; I’m trying to figure out the layout for the level right now.

cool glad im not the only one:D

its looking good so far, a couple of things to think about.

DS needs to be ultra optimised, so things like those stairs and the lip on the barrels plant pot things are probably out of the question. make those deails with textures. DS can draw 2000 Quads (not tris for some reason) onscreen at once so keep each of your rooms below this, and make nice corridors between bigger rooms with lots of details, so that the details can be loaded in between.

remeber the DSs screen res is 256x192 so render out to that with no anti-a and see what it looks like it will give you a better feel for it.

The stairs are definitely a placeholder for something much better, so don’t worry about that. The entire model was a little over 1000 polygons, probably close to 2500 triangles. As I said, I’m just blocking it in and I think I’m probably going to change the layout a bit. I’m also probably going to completely redo everything you see in these screens, and use massive numbers of alpha planes for details that the player would never get close to.

Okey dokey, here’s an update with a complete redesign. This is supposed to be some sort of throne room or something (I might change that later) from which you’re supposed to steal important documents… or something.

These are renders and screengrabs with the normals flipped so it’s easier to see everything. There’s nothing on the inside except for a few doors, so I didn’t bother including any camera-view renders.

To give a better sense of scale, that hall thing that juts out from the main structure is 30 feet wide. This place is very big.

Never try to do homework, write a novel, do CG at the same time. I’m going to continue with this, though I’m going to use it as texture practice in the game art forum. I simply haven’t had much time for this, but I will be able to work on it off and on if it’s not for a contest.
