Tutorial: First steps in Max 8 Cloth

#1

I am doing a still image and I was needing Cloth so I learned it. Then I liked the idea
of doing a tutorial so you can quickly learn the basics of Max8 Cloth and see how
I do things something different than the max help says it must be done.

I have splitted in five 20Mb parts using rar.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5

thankyou very much for that tutorial, i was having problems with cloth, but now i think i wont have so many problems :stuck_out_tongue:

i must congradulate you on using that computer speach program, your english was good enough for me to have no problems following you.

how would i make pants that were baggy at the bottom? i am trying to make snowboard pants.

why have you put up 5 links. they are all the same video?

Nice. Thank you.
By the way, you could use the Mesh Select mod to select open edges and convert that selection to vertices to save you the time of manually selecting the vertices that need welding.
Also, do you really need the UVW Map modifier? Garment Maker generates UV coordinates itself.

eagle4:
the pants I think you must choose the right fabric (not the wet fabric I was using
of course) and also draw your pattern with sufficient width in that zone.
The 5 links point to a multi part rar file for easy downloading. It is better this way
than point to the full 100Mb file and your internet connection hangs when you had downloaded 90Mb or so.

Frankyboy:
Edited: You are right. Use Mesh Select and click Select Open Edges, then in the Edit Mesh
you only need unselect the unwanted vertices to weld.

Yes it is not needed the UVWMapping because Garment generates Mapping.
I didn’t know that. Thanks.:arteest:

keep up the good work

with cloth i never quite get it to work properly, the seams always screw up, also when i design my patterns they never stay the same shape, they always just suck in arround my character, instead of wrapping arround him, so i am left with a very large pair of pants, instead of pants that fit. any thoughts?

Can I make a cloth object with an EPS… That comes straight out of adobe illustrator?

Like in the event I want to make a flag waving in the wind? Also is the cloth affected by forces like gravity and etc…

Not sure what you are getting at here. Can you post a pic or upload a file to illustrate your problem?

#9

Max can import .ai files to make a spline object, which you can then convert into a cloth object with Garment Maker and Cloth.

Like in the event I want to make a flag waving in the wind? Also is the cloth affected by forces like gravity and etc…

Yes, wind and gravity can affect the cloth.

First off great tutorial Bao2, it was very helpful.
I have a question…

First off I have a picture to help out with my question.

What I am trying to do is get rid of the artificting or what every it is in the circled area. What it look like is that flag is folding over it’s self… and I am not sure how to stop this from happening. The final image would be the flag flaping in the wind. looking great in all of it’s glory. I am still a noob at 3ds. I am always learning.

I’m sorry I have no time to play with Cloth and analyze your problems.

You probably understand more Cloth with this tutorials:

Carlos Anguiano tutorials

(in post 6 in that thread you have direct links to the files if you want
download and see them later in another computer)

Kyp: try turning on Self Collision (and adjust the level to > 0 if it doesn’t work too well).

#13

Hey Bao,
Thank you for that tutorial, you rock!
I have a fairy character I just created clothing for. I have a seperate layered pieces of her dress. How do I get these layers of garment clothing to lay on top of each other? Maybe I am going about it wrong.

1)skirt and top and belt are currently seperate objects, I add the garment maker and cloth.
2)the objects simulate on the moving character fine but the clothing is going through each other.

#14

Deepsky: Make sure your put the cloth objects in the same instance of the Cloth modifier (all objects should show up in the “Object Properties” dialog).

#15

They are both in the same cloth properties.
I started it over and redid the garmet on both and it seems that the collision is working. Now I have another issue. The other cloth that I add to the object properties, I cannot grab and adjust its faces or select it’s vertices.
I simulated the bottom dress first and then disabled it in the object properties, added the other top half and simulated it. I need to create a group for the top dress and anchor (surface) the shoulder straps but…as I explained. Am I missing a step?

#16

Make sure the object you want to select vertices on is selected.

#17

Oh. Doh! I had to select the other cloth in order to select it’s face. A few days break is good when your not getting enough sleep.

LADIES AND GENTLEMENS AND ALL YOU OTHER PEOPLE! I would like to say that Bao is a GOD! This cloth tutorial is the best!!! Garment Maker rocks!!! And now I can proceed onto clothing my Seer character who has been nekkid for quite some time now. Thank you Bao!! Thank you!!EXCELLENT WORK!

I did a test not using a character but a cylinder. I clothed a cylinder. I then rigged the cylinder so now the cylinder bends like an arm. The cylinder already has cloth applied to it and I moved the skin modifier below it just as you said in my other thread but when I move the bones to a different pose, the cloth does not follow. Am I supposed to skin the cloth onto the bones as well? or After I pose the cylinder, am I supposed to simulate the cloth again. I’m kind of confused.

#20

You don’t need to rig the cloth at all. You rig the character, and the cloth reacts to it through collisions.
