Trying to duplicate this effect

#1

Hi all,
I am trying to duplicate the title effect from the Star Trek trailer found here:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/startrek_trailer3_small.html

The effect is the black background with the bluish flare effect in the middle that tapers horizontally to the edges, and then the text appears and fades. I have no problem with the text effect but creating the bluish flare effect is giving me some problems. I am a certain this is rather simple but it is making me crazy. I guess I could make it in photoshop and then fade it in and out but is there another way in AE with lights? Any ideas?

Thanks

Well here is a low-tech method you could try…

Duplicate the text layer. Fill the bottom layer with dark blue color. Apply a directional blur (Rotation 90 degrees). Apply the exposure filter to boost levels, and maybe a fast blur or gaussian blur to soften. Mask off a strip of it horizontally to get just one band.

Trapcode starglow on the “Scope” Preset also looks pretty similar to the look.

You could also do this effect by creating the blue streak in Photoshop - then fade in or size up etc., depending on what you want.

I believe Video Copilot has a tutorial regarding something similar - check out the “Ring” tutorial… In that video he goes over a light burst or solar flare using simple methods.

Thank you both for your replies. In doing my research on this there is also the Knoll light factory pro plug in from red giant software.
I think I will try a few ways and see what way makes more sense for my small brain.

Again, thank you both!
