Trouble with constraints on basic rig

#1

Hi, so I haven’t rigged in quite a while and i’m attempting to rig my model. this is just a basic rig for posing and simple animation. I’m using Maya and I’ve created IK’s for the legs and have control curves on the feet that are point contrained to the IK and orient contrained to the last joint in the leg(ankle) When I grab the root joint the knees should bend but the feet just move and the IK’s stay in place. I’m not sure what I did wrong or if I missed a step but any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is a video as well demonstrating what my problem is.

Thanks,

Hi Troy,

That really weird stuff man, and to be honest Its a little hard to see from your video what causes such anomaly  but not all is lost, here’s what we can do :

1.) Select and Delete Your IK handle .

2.) Go SKELETON >> IK HANDLE TOOL option box, make sure You use ikRP solver as your current solver, and that SOLVER ENABLE check box is ON. close window

3.) Click on your thigh joint and then on your ankle joint

3.) At this point your brand new shiny IK handle should be selected, if it isn’t then make sure it is  , shift select Your foot control curve and go EDIT >> PARENT ( or simply CTRL + P )

4.) Select Your Foot control curve then shift select Your ankle joint and go CONSTRAIN >> ORIENT option box .
Now if Your foot control curve doesn’t share the same world space rotation as your ankle joint (which from looking at your video I guess it Doesn’t) Then make sure MAINTAIN OFFSET check box is on, then click ADD

5.) By now You should have your very basic leg IK ready :applause:

6.) If everything forks fine then rinse and repeat for the other leg and the arms

Let me know if that solved your problem

Cheers,

Dan

Well this kind of problem is due to hierarchy you need to have the joints in separate hierarchy and plus its too early for this kind of thing finish the whole ring then you cn work on these things.

Dancel89,

Thanks for your help, It was the RP solver. I had it set to SC… Its been so long since I rigged I hadn’t realized I needed RP selected. Thanks again, working like a charm.

It had nothing to do with Hierarchy, thanks anyways. And its never too early to do this when your testing things out. The rig is almost finished for my needs. I don’t need anything advanced, just something to pose my character, will be adding more joints in the spine and feet though.

Thanks again for the reply.

Regards,

Troy
