transparency png/tga

#1

Hey all,

I’m having problems with transparancey in photoshop (cs3)

I have used pngs but I’m finding they generate random white artifacts around the edges. This is only apparent when I try to bring it into a 3d programme (3dsmax) see image

Someone told me PS has made a bit of a ba*ls up with they go about generating transparancey in later versions especially with tga’s and recommend using a"retro patch" lol this is the frist time I have heard of a patch that brings you back versions!

I cant belive PS has a flaw of this magnitude relating to the way they deal with transparancey not being in line with the way transparancey with png’s and tga’s work in the real world.

If this is the case and I’m not going to get good results everytime with PS what would be the other 2D alternatvie to outputting pngs with transparancey in 3d games

I have heard fireworks or fusion are the ones to work with.

Any ideas folks?

hi Murphz,

that problem with the transparency in png files was exactly the reason why i bought vimas image guru. it’s a photoshop plugin that does exactly what photoshop should do in the first place! like openexr and their crippled tga-support - you gotta “buy” plugins to compensate photoshop’s nowhere-to-find-but-should-be-somewhere-features! oh yeah, i was shocked to read that fireworks (adobe?!) has THAT png-feature… ???

read this (about png support like it should be):

http://www.vimas.com/ve_vwi_png.htm

and decide for yourself - the vimas-plugin is still useful (CS3 - i don’t own CS4, so don’t know about that)… but a little later you want to use .exr files - oh, another plugin that’s going to cost you… EXTRA!

chem!

Chemkid, Thanks alot for your feed back,

it backs my suspisions up.

I’ll have a look at your links. It seems exactly what I need.

I was looking at pngoutas an alternative.

As yourself I’m shocked and in the same hand not so surprised that they offer the features the user needs, and should have, in another of thier products(fireworks)!!

Adobe get your act together, we all dont have money printing machines out the back.

Is better png compression the issue here, or expected transparency results? And in either case, why not use DDS if you’re using them in a game engine?

Hey moiremusic,

Unfortunately DDS is not supported by the engine that I use. (irrlicht).

Besides I have had great results in the past from using png see image and it is more the unexpected results rather than the compression but I suspect that the former is a result of the latter in the case of photoshop.

I’ll try the vimas Chemkid and report my results.

Thanks for your time on this matter folks

Updated 11.25am. I have installed a trial version of fireworks and tested thier png 32bit exporter. Works a treat. I dont know whether to laugh or cry!
