Training question...

#1

Hi guys, I’m brand new to Motionbuilder (7.5) and have been looking into training. For someone that’s also not experienced in animation I was wondering if the Autodesk Foundation e-DVD would be a good one to get me started. I’ve had a look at the 3DBuzz tutorials but they’re for version 5 mostly, and can be confusing at times because of interface changes that’ve taken place since then.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

So… not a popular one then? Is there any other training that comes highly recommended?

I think that the buzz training is going to be the best bet to get you going for free. autodesk has some support videos and actualy the demo videos on the motionbuilder feature page will give you a better start than the intro foundation e-dvd I think.

My dvd has a good solid foundation to animation in motionbuilder along with understanding the hows and whys (also advanced rigging of course) but it could be of help once your up and running.

The initial ‘getting started’ bit is the bit seemingly no one teaches on. The Buzz tutorials are mostly useless because as you’re trying to follow along the workspace and options they pull up are in vastly different places in 7.5. If the teaching was precise and to the point I might be able to deal with it better, but they really do waffle, which wastes a lot of time if you can’t easily follow along.

The free tutorials on the Autodesk site are good, but the beginner ones seem to be targeted at people who aren’t beginners at all. I got confused in the first five seconds. The rest are either feature previews of 7.5 features, or advanced setup tutorials.

Thanks for the link to your DVD. I’ll check it out if I can manage to progress from newb status to something more advanced

Just a followup to this… I went and purchased the version 7 Foundation eDVD, and have watched through all three hours of it. It was quite helpful! It’d be great if it were longer and had covered more, but for what it’s worth I got my money out of it. I can now look at Motionbuilder and figure things out, whereas before the program seemed like a half-impossible mountain to climb.

The eDVD runs through a series of tutorials aimed at someone that’s new to Motionbuilder, but isn’t a complete 3D beginner. So, the pacing of the training is really good… at no stage did I feel as though I was being treated like a baby, or like a master of animation. A good series for those in my position.
