Does anyone know where find tutorials starting with just a general Photoshop CS4 orientation, to getting started with basic digital painting? I looked on the links thread, but it is just hundreds of links, and it would take hours to sort them out?
Totorials for the Complete Beginner
To get you accustomed to Photoshop, the tutorials at Lynda.com aren’t bad. But of course you’d have to pay for them. As far as digital painting, Don Seegmiller’s books are pretty good. Again, not free.
Note: the last few versions of Photoshop haven’t changed much in terms of painting tools, so any book or tutorial that mentions covering CS3 or CS2 would probably be sufficient.
I’m not sure how much of a beginner you are. There’s a beginner who has traditional art and painting training and then there are those who have never drawn a thing in their life and somehow decided to start now…
Anyway - PSTuts+, pixel2life and several other FREE tutorial sites are great if you are just trying to learn photoshop. It’s important to know all aspects of the program because it can save you time and headaches in the end. There are courses you can take of course and books you can buy put for the best in digital painting try these items:
www.3Dtotal.com - Don’t let the name fool you, the site is all about CG - yes; but they have a wealth of information on Digital Painting. Free tutorials as well as items for purchase.
www.ballisticpublishing.com - get one of their masters series and you are good to go. In-Depth lessons with the low-down on the how-to.
Magazines - these are my favorite. While a little pricey, they definitely are worth the price tag:
ComputerArts - http://www.computerarts.co.uk/ (this is a whole family of magazines and has a wealth of FREE tutorials)
ImagineFX - http://www.imaginefx.com/
http://www.photoshopuser.com/ - NAPP magazine, great subscription and a lot of tutorials.
Now one thing I would like to mention is that Photoshop is one of those programs that a person will never know fully. It will take you a year to become adept enough to not be called a beginner. Maybe sooner - but usually about a year of constantly using it and improving your skills. Also - don’t get hung up on how other do things, learn from the tutorials but “think” about what you are trying to accomplish. If you merely mimick tutorials your outcome will look pretty good but without applying the lesson elsewhere - your time will be wasted. If you are interested in Digital Painting, concentrate on brush techniques, light and shadow as well as texturing and coloring.
Hope that those links help, and I wish you luck on your endeavor.
