Too raster heavy?

Well, you know how it goes,…

Your employer want’s a flash version of thier site, so you concept the most beautifull, simplistic, light, ALL vector, USABLE, and data-driven site you’ve ever done…

Then, like any idiot boss, they say something to the effect of:

“Well, we have 6 weeks, 300 products, 4000 images, and REAMS of copy, so why don’t we do it OUR way, and throw your 8 YEARS of usability study, gui/information design, and efficiency OUT THE FRICKEN WINDOW, and make it look like this picture that my 10 year old drew in MS paint last night?”
“Do it, or you’re laid off.”

Retards…

I really cannot be the only one out there that get’s hired SPECIFICLY for our design and usability skills and talent, yet our boss’s seem to think that all of that knowledge is of no use to thier online brand???

Anyhoo…
It’s still a MAJOR WIP!! so…ignore, well… everything…
IT DOES NOT FUNCTION AS YET, so…
just seeing if the "slowness is just me… or…

My request is simple, please give me ideas on how to explain to these numbskulls that flash is HARDWARE DEPENDENT, and this site WILL NOT run smoothly on the majority of thier userbase machines with the SEVERE amount of raster data they are forcing me to animate.
(thier userbase consists of carnies with 3 year old hardware…seriously) (they target carnival workers with less than 10 teeth)

PS, ignore the IRONY of their company name! hehe…
Still makes my girlfriend laugh…

Cutting Edge Creations, Inc.

I know the last time I wanted to go to a water slide I wanted to see rusty metal and warninglights… but with toothless carnies running I can only only think of how safe I feel…

Cutting Edge Creations…

Like how to metal doors get hung up while opening that …says quality and is funny at the same time:surprised

I dunno what you can say

my girlfriend worked on a project recently where for some unknown reason the graphic designer gave a jpeg file of a illustrator design which was then converted into swift 3d file that was several megabytes. Was there any camera animation to make the conversion to 3d worthwhile? NO! It one case where a bitmap would have been appropriate.

In general the cutting edge site looks dated and unprofessional and anythign but cutting edge…at least no design wise. I don;t see how it promotes water slides…if anything it make sthem seem more dangerous than they are?

I hear what your saying, I for one am getting hacked off with pre-loading content nowadays, nice lil’ animations of buttons I don’t mind but full screen movement just ticks me off, it slows down the whole navigation front…

absolutely no need for it, I’m running a PIII 800mhz and I just had to get rid of your site due to the 3d boxes being blown around by steam was using all my processor power and everything ran on the jerky side, I assume it’s running at 12fps cos’ that’s what it felt like or even less…

sorry it ain’t a positive post but boss peeps just don’t have a clue, my experience anyways, good luck on swinging them round to your initial idea…

Hey guys, thanks for the replies!

Thanks again, and I agree TOTALY with both of ya:)

Well, sometimes there are miracles! hehe…

I had them look at it, and they actually UNDERSTOOD???

Weird…

Anyhoo, now they wanna stick with the same deal, only this time, a LOT less rater animation. Thank god:)

Thanks again all!

Flash still doesn’t handle raster images as efficiently as something like Director. Part of it has to do with hardware… but most of it is because… Flash was made mainly for vector based animations with support for raster images (mainly static images) but its rendering engine is optimized for vectors. Believe me, that is straight from the horse’s mouth. So, just tell big boss… someone from MACR. told you so… I worked at MACR for 2 1/2 yrs. =)
