I was wondering if it was standard practice for a modeler to make all of their own base meshes or is it acceptable to use software like make human to give you a starting point?
TO use Make Human or to not use makehuman?
I think it depend from purpose of model. If you’re working on vizualisation of huge airport then nobody will expect from you to create by your own all people there. But if you’re working on some kind of game, animation or still where the character is playing the important role (so it’s not just a background or supplement) then it would be good to create a whole character by your own.

Thank you. I was debating about using it for a starting point on a character, but i guess ill just start with zspheres.
But say i was making a modern soldier like character where they are covered from head to toe in clothing of some time with a mask and helmet with glasses that are reflective. since Im just extracting geometry from the base mesh and the base mesh really isnt going to be used for anything other than for something to extract from?
Not trying to avoid the practice because I know I need it. I just lost my original file that had my original base I made, and Im trying to catch back up to where I was before my project is due.
In a big production team you will get a base mesh handed to you, because of time, accuracy & sometimes rigging shared across models. For a personal project there is no problem using an existing model as a base. No one cares about the body underneath if it will never be seen.
If you do contract work freelancing you need to be careful with your source material, the contract usually states clearly that all the work must be done by the artist. It wouldn’t apply to a simple base mesh that has gone through levels of sculpting and then retopologized, at that stage it should’ve been modified enough that it becomes a unique piece.
