time to learn projections!

#1

Hey everyone!

I have been pretty busy over the last while and havent really been posting , but I am going to get back at posting up my stuff and commenting on others.

I decided that it is time for me to start learning projection maps. I have been putting it off for a long while now. I wanted to make sure that my matte painting skills have emproved enough (one thing at a time i guess).

So to start doing projections I decided that I would have a 100% nature scene with no visible architecture. Just so that I dont get overwhelmed once I start. So I came up with this concept a few nights ago as a test.

And then I did a projection onto the concept , just to test it out.

Today I started working on the final shot. It will not be 100% similar to the concept but the concepts main purpose was just for testing.

Here is the matte painting so far.

Reference images:

To create the mountain I would crop little sections of that middle reference image and then do some paint over to make them look like one formation aswell to make it look like it is in the right perspective to the camera. If anyone whats to know more about the process just drop me a line in here and I can post up some more images and explain my process with a bit more detail.

Any crits/comments are most welcome. I am still in the learning process so any advise would come in handy.

Thanks

Hey guys, just an update. Trying to fill in the reast of the space before i really start getting into more painting to make the photos blend more. I add some cloud cover and I will try out projecting that as well.

Thanks!

hi Matt I think you should match colors for all the mountains shadows and highlights, they look wrong some in blue and some others in magenta , try that and you will see how they will look better
right now you have the FG with blue shadows and white highlights, the MG magenta shadows and highlights and the BG with blue shadows and yellow/orange highlights

Hey thanks a lot Jaime! I will make sure to go in and do all the color correcting

I just finished the first test projection. I wanted to give it a try before I continued working on the matte so I would know what needed to be done for the final version.

Here is the youtube link: Video make sure to click the HQ button

thanks for the feedback Jaime
