Hi all,

Here’s my most recent matte painting. Please let me know what you think!

Started with:

And here is my matte after roughly 7-8 hours of work.

Thanks for taking a look. Any C&C to help me improve is most appreciated.

The color balance works well here, but there are two main problems I am seeing. First, you neeed to establish a light source. The shadows in the snow path are saying that the light is direct and coming from the right. This needs to be reflected in the large mountains and the treeline in the middleground.
Another problem is with scale and perspective. The mountains in the back seem way too large. My suggestion would be to lean more towards the mountains you have in the original image, and add some transition in between the cabin and the mountains, which will help to add depth.
Also, if your focal point is the cabin, then large mountain behind it need to be shrunk, or just made more irregular so its less distracting.

Hi , I agree with the first comment , I think light source is the most important thing in this one, you need to work with aerial perspective, the background mountains and the blue saturated sky don’t match at all, you still need to work with your photo textures and learn how to blend them perfectly , I see u used some trees behind some mountains those must be huge ! be careful with scale and depth in objects , I would say that you first look for photo reference on what kind of mood/atmosphere you want and with that information just try that your elements in your matte painting match the photo reference values

Thank you for the tips! I’ll work on it a bit more and keep your suggestions in mind.
