Underneath the stylistic look, the structure of the head looks crude, as if done by someone without proper knowledge of anatomy/figure. If it’s meant to look that way (to emulate how a primitive person would draw), then that’s a different story.
What are you trying to express with this image though?
Yes, I was going for a more primitive look. Trust me, I know my portrait anatomy. One of the great things about Alchemy is the unpredictable nature of its tools. That unpredictability provides a creative experience I think that is similar to the first time you pick up a pencil, brush or any artistic tool. So much of what it does is unexpected. The more refined and practiced you become with an instrument, the further you get from that initial sense of exploration and discovery. It takes a leap of faith. There’s something raw and honest about the things that arise from it.
I saw Tool a couple weeks ago and some of their visuals resonated with me. I had to let go of everything I knew about anatomy while watching their visuals which were much more expressive. The idea of a primordial third eye, which is primitive and typically dormant and the energy associated with it was what this was about.
I feel like the direction of the light emanating from the eyes is incorrect and disconcerting because of the placement of facial features and the direction they appear to be pointing. The head is facing forward and maybe a little tilted up. At least that is the impression I get from the brow ridge. So this would mean that the beams are either level with the viewer or directed above the viewer.
I’ve been playing with Alchemy on and off for a while. But I haven’t thought of way to integrate it into my work. I’ve been toying with the idea of using it for Painter paper textures. It is a fun tool to warm up with
