Its a lovely piece of work, very beautiful. What I would suggest is that it needs more hill on right hand side, to frame the composition a bit more. The detail on the right leads your eye off the image, whilst if you extend that hill with the arch it would improve it compositionally. Apart from that excellent.
Hey man , the detail in this image is simply amazing! really outstanding work. The only crits I have is that the people in the foreground and the alien craft are both trying to be the focal point. In my opinion I think you should change the blue on the cross and make it have the same colors that are in the rest of the image. Or just knock the brightness of it down a bit and add the same blue at a higher contrast to the alian structure. But other then that man this is one hot matte painting.
Here is small update. I’ll see to change cross, as you mentioned. I think you are right.

Hey great amount of detail and excellent mood! thumbs up! I also like the design of the spaceship!
one thing that concerns me a little is the composition with the large dark left area. I feel the eye drifting off to the right a bit too quickly due to that. Maybe cropping the image down on the left to a less wide-screen aspect-ration could help or creating a countershape on the right… but just suggestions… great mattepainting!

Nice work, interesting ship design. Seems a tad unbalanced to the left. Oh and the smoke trail really is killing the whole image
looks like an after thought.

Love it, at first i didnt but when I saw the monks with the cross I was hooked. Could you do a painting of the monks as a large painting as that has really spooked me! The intrigue and quality has me in its grip
Rich
Cool idea, why not, maybe i will paint one.
Btw love idea with cs4 matte painting palette, but i am still cs3 user

I’ll cut straight to the crits and save the praise for later
man, the image is really unbalanced…there you have a nice right part with tons of detail and then you have a totaly empty and dark left part…that’s a big no-no…try to balance it a bit, maybe put a black foreground rock on each side and make it smaller?
I can see this shot as a pull out from the monks to a fullscreen shot, part of the narrative. Yes the left is overly dark however if you look it as a camera move which I have done it works.
Start with the negative and finish with the positive is how to structure a critique, Mr TV…
Looking forward to seeing more
Rich
mr. R> however this is not an animation, but a still, and as such, different rules apply
Every image is suited for a purpose, but may not be good for others. We are here to critique his still composition, not imagine scenarios and possible camera moves. If we accept that as an excuse then everyone can build random images and say 'hey, I know the image doesn’t work as a whole but try to imagine a ship flying in!"
I like the image on the right part, it has good technique and detail, it’s the composition that breaks it.
Lots of respect here for your opinion here, just didnt like they way you voiced it. I am paid to read images, if you look closely at my previous comments I did not like it. However I have grown to it.
The camera move and animation thing you are right about and painters should not use it as an excuse. However I read the painting and saw where the artist was going.
I also know the artist very well and I know for a fact that he is accomplished. I also took the time to reread his other posts. He does not deliberately set out to do bad compositions. I used the benefit of the doubt here and read his comp.
I have a little bit of advice for you in this industry as a professional creative try and lighten up and be a bit more positive with your comments. As the dog you kick may be the one who hires you.
Apologies to the OP, had to draw a line somewhere.
I am still interested in seeing a painting of the monks with there cross, would it be possible if you could show us how you came to do this comp, prehaps a sketch.
Many thanks would love to see more of your work,
Rich
It’s cool, i appreciate critics you gave me.
Suirebit, you have one way of looking at things, R you have another.
I have learn allot about composition, and maybe it's a bit unbalanced. You need to now i saw that, but i left it this way because i like it and because wanted to tell some kind of story using matte painting technique. Probably this image could be cropped because it is to wide, so then left side with hill should be smaller, but still i left it like that.
