THE ULTIMATE MAYA AND MENTAL RAY ARCHVIZ GUIDE

#181

I just want to tell you. I´m studying your guide so I can use it for students in Costa Rica. This means 20 students every four moths will be using every piece of information you have created.

So, just wait until may I start giving this guide to my students and you will start to see some massive amount of feedback!

Just wait a bit for that!

Thanks again

I´m dying for the 2012 scenes! Please

#182

Hey Alex,

Tried to send you a pm but your inbox is full! Thanks again for all the hard work you put into this guide! Really appreciate it!

-Justin

#183

Try again Justin just cleared up my inbox and you should too, considering that yours is full as well…

Since I’m in a sharing mood if you would like me to share the original uncompressed pdf docs with the HD screenshots, to avoid destroying your eyes following up using the compressed pdf docs drop me a PM.

So you will have the original version of the Tutorial but first will need a confirmation via PM considering that being copyrighted material, will be able to share it only with the guys who supported me here on CGTalk…

With a few hardcore online friends who kept patiently waiting for the Guide release since years now to say thanks and if they want me to, will be glad to share the static Maya 2012 SP1A production scenes as well.

Ciao.

PS. Thanks again to Isidro from Costa Rica and concerning Lexus-friendly Joie guess he might be too busy to fool around with this trivial assets, just kidding Jose…:stuck_out_tongue:

“I know it seems hard sometimes, but remember one thing… Through every dark night, there’s a bright day after that… So no matter how hard it get, stick your chest out, keep ya head up… and handle it.”

#184

thanks too you Alex! =)

Just to say, there are a few links broken in the first post

in the step 13 in the main how to guide.

The “DAYSKYPHOTOPASSES_2011” production scene screenshots, in the Acrobat Portfolio.pdf format:

http://www.samui3d.com/DAYSKYPHOTOP...SCREENSHOTS.rar

the link is broken, in the page 11 of the cgtalk thread the link is ok and functioning

but the links in the first page are dead

just to let you know

#185

Isidro thanks for pointing out the few broken links on the first page, caused by the long naming convention.

Just fixed the broken links on the first page and guess the “How To” pdf doc should be fine, since the hyperlinks points to the pages of the thread here on CGTalk and not to the assets.

Keep up checking the assets and let me know, if you find other little flaws…:applause:

PS. A good chance to remind you that once extracted the “How To” as well as the other main Tutorial Guide pdf docs, should be placed under the same folder directory.

Ciao.

#186

Well crawled out from the grave to remind you that if you are interested to play around with these Maya 2011 production scenes, just send me a PM.

These Maya 2011 assets will bring you a bit closer to the level of complexity displayed by the latest (20) and something, Maya 2012 Dynamics production scenes.

A last note to let you know that after a short break I ‘might’ update and improve a couple of interior scenes of the Condo in Bangkok, created back in 2008…:stuck_out_tongue:

The Maya 2008 render:

The real thing:

With the Mental Ray lighting, rendering and texturing techniques used in the latest Maya 2012 assets, to test how photorealistic we can go thanks to this Guide.

The interiors was created more than a year before the (27) floors storey buildings was even built, at the time there was just a huge empty piece of land in the center of Bkk.

I ‘might’ do this to check how much I learned myself by creating the Guide and also because I start to feel, that maybe one of the reasons of the limited feedback…

Could be due to the fact that the green users don’t like much the Classroom as well as the Sponza production scene, which in my opinion is the best learning scene ever.

Considering that the Sponza scene is both an exterior as well as an interior since the global environment lighting is coming from the top, thus creating a difficult lighting condition.

PS. As soon as I will post here on CGTalk a collective Acrobat Portfolio pdf doc, with the complex Maya 2012 Dynamics production scenes screenshots.

Ciao.

#187

Hey Alex, I think you tried to send me a private message but my inbox was full, retry now

#188

Hi Alex!!, keep it up with the improved scenes.

If you could share the Maya 2011 Duncan Brinsmead Hairs Systems production scenes mentioned in your previous post, I would be very interested to test them!

#189

Hi Hector and as I told you via PM, I might go public and share these elaborate Maya 2011 assets as well.

I was already considering doing so after sensing the feeling of disappointment, displayed by the users toward Autodesk on the Maya 2012 SP2 thread:

Maya 2012 Service Pack 2

Now if you go to the first page of this thread, you’ll notice that I just added the links to the original Tutorial Guide main pdf docs…

To avoid causin’ strain on the eyes of the users which might be following up with the Guide, using the compressed pdf’s with the low-rez screenshots:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=87&t=922792&page=1

Anyway, wiil post them here as well…

The original Tutorial Guide, main pdf docs:

The main “INTRO_2009_SP1A_ORIGINAL.rar” pdf doc.

The main “PART1_2009_SP1A_ORIGINAL.rar” pdf doc.

The main “PART2_2009_SP1A_ORIGINAL.rar” pdf doc.

The main “PART3_2009_SP1A_ORIGINAL.rar” pdf doc.

The main “PART4_2011_ORIGINAL.rar” pdf doc.

The main “PART5_2011_ORIGINAL.rar” pdf doc.

The main “THE_FLY_THROUGH_STEREO_CAMERA_MOTION_PATH_ANIMATION_LINKS.rar” pdf doc.

And again please refrain from printing or uploading the original copyrighted pdf’s for commercial purposes, else as Clint Eastwood always used to say:

“C’mon make my day”, since I will make a living suing asses online.:curious:

Back to the Maya 2011 Duncan Brinsmead Hair assets, apart from the above mentioned ‘Former_Long_Hairs_System_Example’ created several years ago…

Used in the scenes to demonstrate how ‘Long Hairs’ as well as ‘Eyebrows’ was done in the past, using Pfx ‘strokeHairThickBlond’ Strokes attached to Dynamic Nurbs curves.

I’ve used almost every single Maya Hairs feature and tool such as the Scale Hair Tool, Paint Hair Follicles, Paint Hair Textures, Start Curves, Rest Curves…

As well as the Modify Curves, Hairs Constraint, Make Selected Curves Dynamic, Make Collide, Assign Paint Effects Brush to Hair and Transplant Hair features.

The main reason I previously refrained from sharing these scenes here on CGTalk is the assets complexity, which will require an adeguate support and feedback.

To conclude, apart from Hector any takes? Since I don’t want to impose my help on you guys, mostly considering that nobody is paying me for doing so.:scream:

A simple: ‘Yes Alex, we would like to have a shot at these assets’ will do…:wise:

Ciao.:wavey:

In fact I use in my daily work everything I’ve learned in this thread among others, adapting these tips to my own needs and pipelines. Let me say your contribution is unvaluable. If someday I do any kind of cinema work, I’ll put you in the “thank’s to…” credits

#191

Cool Jose thanks, didn’t expect such a kind statement from you…:surprised

Even if this thread seems a bit slow at the moment, Hector here you go with the links to the Duncan Brinsmead Hair Systems Maya 2011 production scenes:

#192

Niceee Alex : D!!, thank you for the update and more over for the scenes!

#193

Well finally I finish the HOW TO.pdf, I have been so busy! But now I will be working part time and will have a lot of time to go to the entire guide!

God I have been so excited to start this for real!

#194

I need a guide for the guide. Are the links on the front page up-to-date with some of the links I see throughout this thread?

edit

Apparently there is! Reading over the ‘How To’ now.

#195

Hi Alex, reading your guide I have a question.

In Note 17 Part 1. The mental ray “miDefaultOptions”

The method for using the fb_virtual using string options is valid for maya 2012 too?

And I see to that you use the importon_emited in as string option numer 27, can you explain me a bit how that works?

Thanks!

#196

I found something about the subject in MayaStation :

I quote them:

"However, you can change your frame buffer cache mechanism in Maya on the mentalrayGlobals node, under Extra Attributes, or using the MEL command:

setAttr mentalrayGlobals.frameBufferMode 0;

The values for the attribute are:

0 = All in Memory (Off);
1 = Full Disk Caching Using Memory Mapping (On);
2 = Partial Disk Caching Using Tiles (Cache)

For users of mental ray Standalone, this is equivalent to setting the flag “-fb_virtual”.

My Question is, if I use the “fb_virtual” flag as an string option of a value of 2, the is the same as use the Partial Disk Caching Using Tiles (Cache) from the MentalRayGlobals?

I just that I´m a bit confused if is the same function but we are accessing it from different places.

Thanks Alex

#197

I wish there was a guide for the ‘How To’ guide xD

#198

Hi!!! Thanks for this massive data! I finished my ‘How To’, ‘Intro’ and now I am on ‘Part1’ -YAY!
It’s going pretty slow since I am also reading all the extra links you have included which also links to other mr resources. How Fantastic!!

Since it’s such a large data I am trying to follow everything to the ‘T’ and got freaked out for not being able to find ‘sponzasimulations.mb’ file. There are sponzasimulations2009 and sponzasimulations2011 mb files but they look different from the screen shots so I am assuming there is a file without version extension (?!)
Where did I miss it? Could you please post a link?!

#199

Exactly the files was re-done and renamed as follows: SPONZASIMULATIONS_2009_SP1A and SPONZASIMULATIONS_2011.
Remind you that you can download all the assets, using the links provided on the first page of this thread.
Suggest you to use the mirror download, kindly provided by Mitch aka “EightBit”:
http://thepixelfarm.com/ArchvizGuide/index.html
Sorry but no more flooding CGTalk with my online rants, for the moment…:scream:
Ciao.:wavey:
PS. Please don’t archive this thread, I’m not finished yet…

Wow, i was just thinking about Maya, since 3ds max MR integration is poor beyond words, and then i find this! Thank you so very much! I will never, ever, ever again get agitated when i see firms i never heard of use my AutoCAD dynamic blocks

You sir are awesome, and an inspiration to us all.
