Hello all,

This is the 3rd matte I’ve posted on these forums. Just hoping to get some comments and feedback and maybe some suggestions.

This is the image I chose to start with.

Here is my first attempt after about 5 hours of work.

I showed this to my boyfriend and he gave me some suggestions. Like how the moonlight is too strong, but I think it works. I need some other opinions :slight_smile:

I have already made some changes and will post an updated image after seeing what you all have to say about it.

hello stephanie, well I see some things that might help you with this and your future matte paintings
first I see you have a pretty good understanding of what Mood is, I see a nice atmosphere and color as well.
the issue here is light itself , you need to understand how light works and how materials react to light, you have a strong light source here but I don’t see some shadow casting from that source, also you have a tree in the foreground and the god rays makes it confusing, I don’t know how far or close it is
you need to play more with shadow and light when working on a night shot like this one
take a look at this real reference , cinematography is painting with light to get from shapes what you really want, if you see the image the big blue light working as moon light would be fake in real life but it works for the frame and to bring out the shapes and details from the shaded part of the trees

I was looking up some images with moonlight & trees and I came to the conclusion that moonlight doesn’t cause rays of light. It sort of just glows. Is this correct? And if so, then my painting is completely wrong.

Can someone confirm this or let me know what is right? hehe :slight_smile:

I played around with the image a bit after getting some more suggestions from friends and family. I decided to make a daytime and a nighttime version. Not much difference, but let me know what you think!
