The fire cat and caroline

#1

Hello, here is a little painting i did in photoshop in the past week

this is the reference for the face _ a girl called caroline

and here are some wips from that show how i worked
i made a sketch and took a 3d model of a generic girl i made, and posed it to find more or less the pose im looking for (even thu i am not so happy with the final pose… but that’s too late )

in the begining i was thinking to make a little dragon or a fire bird
but i lost a cat called simba not long ago and i know caroline love cats
so i decided to change it to a fire cat…

than started to paint, using wacom and photoshop

and worked on it few nights
until it was finished.

i would really love some critics and comments before i upload it as final result
thank you

The fire cat: I really like the fire cat. The only thing that feels unresolved with it is the paw on her shoulder closest to her hair. It’s unclear how that paw is attached to it’s body.

The girl: Someone else with more experience on figure drawing/painting will probably chime in on this one. But the issue that caught my eye was an inconsistancy in the shading of the face compared to the shading else. I guess I was expecting more contrast. Even if there is another light source on the right (our right not hers), the shading doesn’t look consistant. If there is a light on the right, then I would expect more the material to be interacting with this light source and i’m not seeing that (shoulder sleeves, bodice and jewelry).

This painting has potential. You just need to be more vigilant about how you depict the character.

The way you’re using references is not ideal. Read this post I wrote for another WIP thread–it explains the dangers of doing a “Frankenstein” and using inanimate mannequins to pose as reference:

i agree with you, i think that thats why somthings bothered me from the beginning
i need to completely reconstruct the painting with some real life reference
that will solve also the lighting issue

thanks a lot
i enjoyed reading your notes on reference and i agree
