The Wheel Of Time
City of Tar Valon

[b]Description:[/b][b] Tar Valon[[/b] is a city[[1]](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Tar_Valon#cite_note-0) located on an island on the [River Erinin](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/River_Erinin), within sight of [Dragonmount](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Dragonmount). It is the center of [Aes Sedai](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Aes_Sedai) power and is also the largest, most populous city in the [Westlands](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Westlands). Tar Valon also controls a small amount of territory directly adjacent to it, although it does not have as much land as it did before the [War of the Hundred Years](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/War_of_the_Hundred_Years). Tar Valon is ruled by the [Amyrlin Seat](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Amyrlin_Seat), although the day-to-day bureaucracy is handled by a council of Aes Sedai sisters and civil administrators. The city is notable as the only place where [Aes Sedai](http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Aes_Sedai) have wielded officialized administrative power since the War of the Hundred Years. The population of the city in 1000 NE is roughly 500,000. It has remained independent of outside control for its entire existence, although it has suffered several major sieges and even direct assaults.

Due to many talks with wot fans in general the layout ans style is still up to receive great change mostly in the inner wall area and around the tower/ the tower itself. we are hoping to gain a concept artists to help with these issues. I have compiled a large Faq as well and then even converted into a quick note style FAQ that gives us references as to how things should look and how they should be presented.

If you are interested in joining the project or would like to help in any small way please contact me here by pm or on this thread. thank you for your time and most of all great thanks to the late Robert Jordan who created this beautiful city in his mind and shared it through an amazing fantasy series.

So far the architectural design fro the housing and city layout is something similar to Greek island architecture/ middle eastern/ Prague lol. playing around with different things at the moment.

laters :P

sAnd since i exceeded the image list for one post heres a second.

my references:

And small material work:

#3

oooooh. Tar Valon!! Gotta keep my eye on this one. I would help you, but unfortunatly i don’t have the time. But the best of luck to you!!

#4

thanks  we started on the ogrier wall… the other one was a temp. thanks to daworm for getting the curve to work

#5

fixed my duplivert problems and re-laid out the city, i have a lot of manual tweaking and detailing to do in the city and building layout placement.

also i’m trying to set up a checklist of whats still needed atm in the modeling area(materials and textures are a completly different story)

#6

more detail and an ogrier gate

#7

more buildings coming up…need to add some height difference with towers and such…but i’ll get the main layout with simple buildings first.

#8

ouch. Looking great! so far. Continue the fantastic work. Can’t wait to see this textured!

Will you be adding people and items (wheel carts, horses) etc to the city? Are you thinking of making a short animation or fly through?
Are you thinking of making more scenes form wheel of time?

Good luck!

-thondal-

#9

Hell yes i plan on more scenes in the future

yes i plan on simple objects for the city…not quite sure about horses or people though…they would add a lot but they would also drastically increase the workload and render times…but would be awesome to see i have to admit. but wagons and houses and a lot of other misc items i plan to add.

while i was original intending for multiple still images…i would love to make a fly through…my only problems with this is render times…for those that don’t know i’m doing this off of my laptop :stuck_out_tongue: and while i consider it reasonably high performance, i just don’t like the idea of it running so long for renders if you know what i mean…wear and tear and in-ability to use the laptop would hurt…but possibly i could render with the power of my 2 older desktops…just have to wait and see i guess.

btw my current render times are around 2:07 min right now in blender internal…thats un optimized and HD 1080p preset settings and standard AO in blender 2.5 64bit alpha
40 seconds per frame without AO

Progress…should be done with all the base buildings by tomorrow afternoon…gonna get some sleep…

hand placing buildings is kicking my ass :stuck_out_tongue: but ensures randomization of buildings.

#10

you doing this all by yourself? If that’s the case i could help you. Just send me an email at simen.skogheim@gmail.com if you’re interested. Also what is your computer (laptop and desktop) specs… For a flythrough i could render it for you once you set up the way it should go… My computer specs are: quad core 2,9ghz 4gb ram, and ati radeon hd 4870… just send me a message.

#11

it’s complicated…but yes the original people that were helping have become busy…so every once in a while i hear from them but not to often…i’ll explain more.

also for yours and everyone else notice

I’m running on an HP pavillion dv7-2180 us laptop
6gb ram
quad core 2.0 ghz
and an HD radeon 4650

#12

Dang… strong laptop :stuck_out_tongue:
I would have bought myself a stronger computer, but my money is kinda limited as i just bought a house and have a little daughter and a wife… it’s really hard to justify using 20 thousand (NOK) on a computer :P… allthough i really want to :stuck_out_tongue:

#13

yes i got lucky…well basically i told my grandmother it was for school :p…which it is…just other things as well

it was about 1300 so i thought it was a damn good deal when i found it…win 7 is running nice on it.

one of the biggest reasons why i have so much time for this project atm is the lack of work…so ya haha

#14

Base houses are finally done! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2976929/Dock.jpg

#16

#17

very impressive - keep em going

#18

Oh believe me its still going

Towers have been merged to main scene daworms back and been doing some great modeling finishing his INN and a small boat

eat it up!

hope to have more real soon

excellent work so far, very different to what I had in my mind when I’ve read the books, I have visions of the island being higher then you have and having more of a slope so that the base of the white tower is also high and lends the tower further height.
