Thanks Selphoo!

Part of the October painting I’m working on. I’ve been making some custom soft leafy foliage type brushes in Photoshop and layering things up. Trying to keep it fairly impressionistic back there, a lot is going to be covered up with a swirl of leaves.

And I’m about to be seriously yanked out of my comfort zone… I signed up for the CG workshop in Environment Concept Design, which starts end of October. Perspective, composing a complex scene, all the things I need to work on… Ouch, it’s gonna be painful. But I got so much out of the last CG workshop I took, so I’m hoping this experience will be similar. Wish me luck, I am venturing into highly unknown territory…

HEY Del…:wavey: …GOOD LUCK…

I think that you have made a very wise decision in taking that class.:applause:
You will never regret learning composition properly.
Your technique in painting is GREAT…But like my painting teacher used to say…COMPOSITION is the key to any GREAT PAINTING. Without it, technique is motionless, and lacks the DIRECTION that creates motion, and guides the viewers eye and mind, which good composition provides…It’s like a sentence full of beautiful words, but without proper ordering of the words…The words will be just that, a bunch of beautiful words without meaning. Until they are composed properly, they are beautiful, but meaningless.

HEY…Fall is here in Boston, and the leaves are already changing into those very vivid and highly saturated colors that I enjoy so much…:scream: :bounce:
TAKE CARE Del, and HAVE A GREAT ONE…
Glenn

Thanks Glenn, I’m looking forward to the class.

Someone asked once what kind of 3d work I do, I think it was anand. What I do is not anywhere near as cool as anand’s 3d models, I do mostly lighting, shading and texturing.

But now some of what we did is online, so what the heck, I had a blast working on this, so if you want check it out:

Star Wars Clone Wars Promos on Cartoon Network

We worked on promos for the animated Star Wars series on Cartoon Network - starts here in the US this Friday night (ILM did the series). I worked on the middle promo, the one of Ahsoka, did her lighting, shader work, rendering, one of our very talented animators did her lip sync, and one of our amazing compositors put the piece together. If you live in the US and get Cartoon Network, there are similar promos being shown now of Yoda, Anakin, and Commander Cody - same deal, I worked on the lighting. They look much better on TV  It was fun and challenging, because the character lighting had to be timed and colored to match the footage, but the characters themselves needed to stay very flat (lambert) shaded.

And if you saw the movie and were dissappointed, please do take the time to check out the series on TV - it really picks up after a bit! I think it’s the best 3D animated series out there on television now, lots of action, cool effects, well done characters, simple yet effective look. I’ll be watching the first episode Friday night with my kiddos

very beautifull work you have! I like the way you lighten your faces and the colors you use for the skinshading is nice. Really good work.

#166

Hi Del, your paintings are beautiful. I love the colours you use – your nautilus painting is stunning.

I’ve also been contemplating medical illustration. I have a science part covered, but there are no medical illustration courses within my financial reach (nothing in my country). By the time I have the money I’ll probably be tied down by other commitments. I have a lot of work to do on the illustration side anyway. I was changing my mind on career choices on a weekly basis when I chose my first uni course.

Congrats on all the recognition you’ve been recieving - it’s well deserved! I hope you enjoy the CG workshop.

#167

Hey Del! Thanks for posting the link! Some pretty cool projects you are working on!:scream: The promo is looking great, needless to say! Awesome lighting work too!

#168

Thanks Tednindo! Thank you Aviva - yes, medical illustration programs are few and far between, I’ve found, I think there are only 6 in the US? Thanks Anand, the Star wars stuff was a lot of fun to work on, and we’re enjoying watching the series!

Some recent paintings, environment practice, fun with lighting,

The environmental concept art class starts this week, going to keep me busy… If I come up with something that doesn’t totally suck I’ll post it somewhere

#169

Hey Del! Great stuff, as always!

#170

Thank you, Anand!

I’ve decided to post my work every week from the Environmental Concept class, so that hopefully by the end I can see some progress.

So far it’s been pretty challenging, but in a good way. Philip Straub really knows his stuff, that’s for sure! The first two weeks we are dicussing composition types, finding examples. The assignment was to do 3 quick B&W sketches of cityscapes (ack, perspective) following 3 of the discussed composition types.

Sketches:

Iconic composition

Rule of thirds

Circular

We’ll see what next week brings -

#171

Wow I so envie you for following that workshop
Nothing beats being tought by the best

I like the 2nd one best but all 3 are cool
Keep rockin girl!

#172

Coolio!! I can only imagine the stuff you will turn out when the workshop is done!

#173

Congratz on the portfolio feature!
I think you’re gonna get really busy soon

#174

Hi …Del

Just stopping by to say THANKS for sharing what your learning in your latest class…GREAT examples chosen…BEAUTIFUL WORK.:applause:
REALLY looking forward to seeing LOTS MORE.
TAKE CARE
Glenn

#175

Thanks Anand! Thanks Johan - that was quite a surprise!

Thanks Glenn - this is going to be a really good class for me, I’m learning lots of new things already. Don’t think I’ll be coming up with any environmental masterpieces, but this is all the sort of knowledge I want to apply to my paintings. This week - 8 sketches due! Aaah!

#176

Week two of the environmental Concept art class, more composition types. The radii (converging on a focal point), the L-shape, the triangular composition, and the cross shape. Two sketches due for each type, but I’m just going to post the ones I like best  I’ve been trying to figure out how to work faster, sketchier, without it looking like utter crap.

I’ve been getting good advice from people on how to approach these, and I’ve been trying out a whole lot of new Photoshop brushes. The last two are are the last ones I did. They were definitely easier, and more successful I think.

Next week - perspective. This ought to be good!

#177

oh, WOW!! Thanks for sharing these, Del! One question: for the third image, shouldn’t the vertical lines of the building be converging on a vanishing point above?

#178

Hi Del
great sketches… the more I see of these, the more I regret I’m not at the workshop myself :argh:

I was wondering how it works, a workshop like this… do you login to a network or something?
Or does this work with videos maybe? Just wondering about the practical side…

Looking forward to your next update!

#179

hey anand - hmm, you may be right, I didn’t want that severe a perspective but I probably should have done more with the verticals. I’m hoping this week will be like “Mysteries of Perspective Revealed!” so I’ll finally get a handle on this stuff.

Johan, the way this and the last workshop works… you log onto a password-protected board. Once on this board, there’s an area where the instructor has teaching materials, usually updated once a week. Don had downloadable videos of screen captured movies with him painting on his computer and talking (he’d drop great little nuggets of info all over the place, well worth watching). Phil has written instructional materials and image samples, and so far online videos of him screen cap’d, showing stuff in Photoshop or Painter and talking about examples.

Once you’ve gone through the materials for the week, there’s usually an assignment due, which you post in your own thread on the board. Everyone has a work thread that changes week to week. Other people can comment on your work, and the instructor will leave critique in this thread.

It usually work out pretty well, I’d just be sure you have a decent internet connection before you sign up for anything. We had a person last class from China, they had a terrible time downloading material (I think the Chinese government blocks a lot of internet access).

I will say, the classes have been well worth the $$$ for me. It’s pretty specialized subjects that I think you’d have problems with trying to find at your local art school/university (unless maybe you were in California). And it’s great being able to do it during your own time, rather than trying to hustle yourself to a class after work when you really just want to go home. The downside is, yeah, no “real” teacher there next to you to interact with. And you have to be pretty self-motivated and driven to get the most out of it.

These classes seem to repeat every year, so do consider it for next time - you’ve got great talent/skill already and I know these classes would help you move up to the next level -

Hi Del

Thanks for your elaborate description.

It’s pretty specialized subjects that I think you’d have problems with trying to find at your local art school/university (unless maybe you were in California).

I kinda noticed this from your previous posts, so this is exactly the reason why I wanted to know more.

And it’s great being able to do it during your own time, rather than trying to hustle yourself to a class after work when you really just want to go home.

Yep, I think I’d be able to squeeze it in somehow. Wouldn’t be possible if it were realtime streams or netmeetings (I live in Europe, the time difference alone would cause the streamings to be in the middle of the night here, probably)

These classes seem to repeat every year, so do consider it for next time… and these classes would help you move up to the next level

I’m pretty sure about that as well.

So thanks for the info! I am really keeping a close watch on these workshops and will probably end up signing up for one sooner or later, depending on the subject ofcourse (let’s hope sooner heh)
