ok, figured out what to do with the wings - bones. Maybe they’re growing in, maybe they’re falling out…

Hey Del/c7
Just got a chance to zip through this thread. You've got a pretty amazing compilation of work here! I agree with your initial assessment of your quicker figure sketches - they have a fluidity to them that's very alluring. However, especially in your more recent work, the more planned out paintings are working as well.
The weakest works are the ones where no reference was used, but the cool thing is that they still reflect a good basic knowledge of structure, while displaying your uniquely individual stylistic tendencies.
It goes back to one of the most basic rules... even the most elaborate and meticulously-rendered painting is only as good as its under-drawing. And in your case, your grasp of form and anatomical structure shows through. You mentioned at one point how you look at some of the amazing pieces posted on CGTalk, and wonder if you'll ever get to that level - from what I'm seeing, you're well on your way.
I'm sure I don't need to say it, but keep up the great work! I'll be bookmarking your thread and following along. :)
Beautiful job so far Del, great details on the wings, to me they just look like they are falling apart from him.
Very good skin tones and position, the background also makes him pop out.
Great job, keep at it.
 amazing and so beautyful work!
i am dying to see the whole piece all coming together
Kepp that great work!
Ed, Miguel, Bapke, thanks for looking in and the comments! I’m going to try and wrap up the winged guy in the next few days, need to work on the wings a little more…
Ed, thanks a lot for the assessment, it’s really good to hear. Sometimes I feel I’m just running in place and not getting anywhere, it’s nice to hear I may actually be getting someplace! Thank you.
Some recent stuff from life drawing classes, quickies:

and a longer one - I liked where this was going but once again ran up against my old enemy, not enough time… ![]()
Hi Del
I really like where you’re taking the winged guy! The bones with the feathers blown
away seem to conjure up a story to be told… lovely work, look forward to see next
update
cheers

Hi …Del…
I really like where your going with that winged figure…the way you have united the background with the figure through lighting and color is superb…really adds to the mood and projection of feeling in the figure…GREAT JOB…![]()
I also really like those life drawings …you captured a nice twist between the torso and pelvis in the top right figure…would have been great to see the angles and positioning of the feet also…just to get a better sense of the wieght and stress down there that helps support and create that twist in the upper part of the figure…Had to have a little something to crit while I was here…If for but anything else, just to keep you on your toes…LOL…
Really enjoy your work, and thread.
…GREAT PROGRESS…:applause:![]()
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Thanks Annette and Glenn! Glenn, I hear you about the feet - that’s one of my big weak areas when it comes to figure drawing. I often make the figure too big and the feet end up getting chopped off the page, I’m trying to be more conscious of that! Same thing happened with the longer pose, argh…
I’ve wrapped up this figure painting, spent more time on the wings and re-structured the bone/feathers to follow a little more of a true bird wing anatomy - which is fascinating, BTW. Pretty happy with how this has turned out. I feel like I’ve achieved my goal of integrating a detailed figure painting with a background and elements of my own design - and yep, there’s a story buried in there somewhere too. This Face and Figure painting course with Don has been AWESOME, I’ve learned tons.
There’s a larger version posted in my gallery, original was huge, had to shrink it down to post -

last image is simple beautiful. All thread is amazing. Your figures are nice captured in motion. You have one work I specially like the bronze of age.
It’s amazing how you made that bronze color and forms are nice flowing. Keep going I will watch on this thread.![]()

I have that too… my art teacher said I should mark the outter edges of the figure composed on my paper in the very initial phase of the blocking in stage… starting with a few short lines to indicate where the feet, head and perhaps a few other features are located.
Perhaps something worth trying
Btw, congratz on finishing your last piece… it’s beautiful!
Thanks for stopping by, Andreja, and thanks for the comments! I’m very glad you liked the Age Of Bronze one. I was kind of wondering what you’d think - must be strange to see one of your 3D models turned into 2D! I had a great time working on it, it’s a beautiful model.
Thanks Johan, and thanks for the suggestion. Here’s last night’s figure, I actually managed to fit the foot on the page! Granted, it’s not much of a foot, but at least it’s there:) also did some Photoshop coloring and background work on it. Next week is my last anatomy figure class
. I’m going to see if I can take it again in the summer. It’s pretty tough sometimes dragging myself over there after a long day at work, but it’s really helped me a lot.

And here’s what may be my last hands for the OFDW, I doubt if I’m going to have much time to complete any more, but we’ll see how tomorrow goes. Had to do the whole baby Jesus, cannot resist painting babies…

Working on my next painting, I’m roughing out come color and composition ideas… lots of blacks, dark greens and blues, yellowish light, touches of reddish orange.

I want the figure sitting on something that has him above the water, but I’m not sure what yet. That cube’s gotta go. Maybe a rock, but it can’t be too big, I want to be sure lots of the water and reflections and the floating glowy things are visible. Haven’t decided if they are lanterns or just orbs or maybe mines… I want him to look isolated, and yet serene about it…
Lots to work out still, that’s for sure. As always, comments welcome -
Last night was my final figure drawing/anatomy class. I’m planning on resuming it when it starts up again mid-summer - probably be rusty as all get out by then!

Since the end of the figure painting workshop I’ve suffered a real lack of focus - I’ve started and stopped 3 different paintings :0 but I think this is the one I’m going to concentrate my efforts on -
Greyscale closeup on figure, working out values, still trying to nail down lighting…

Hi …Del…
Really strong life drawings…nice way to end that class…:applause: ![]()
Looking forward to seeing the developement of this new painting that your working on…It already has a great mood/feeling to it…
Maybe have his reflexion mirrored down in the water in front of him…just a passing thought that might be useful to you somehow…
Anyway, can’t wait to see this one take shape…very inspired, and inspiring work…Always a pleasure visiting your thread…Keep up the great work and progress…![]()
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Thanks Rebecca, and thanks Glenn! I plan on having his reflection in the water, hopefully I can pull it off.
Haven’t had a lot of time for drawing, that’s the way thing go in the summer, busy. I have a vacation coming up and I have visions of myself hanging at the beach, sketching and catching up on reading all those art and drawing books I bought but haven’t had time to look at… We’ll see how the reality goes - I’ll probably end up spending most of my time chasing a busy toddler up and down the sand
I’ve continued to work on this painting, though at a pretty leisurely pace… Trying to work out coloring now, I want there to be distinct warms/cool tones, so lots of experimenting… I’m enjoying just painting though, I put on some music and just kind of zone out and paint, very therapeutic.

Hi there Del
Haven’t stopped by here in a while, it’s lovely to see your figure painting updates ![]()
I really liked how your feathered young man turned out, and this new one is looking
wonderful already
Nice serene, yet still masculine feel about him - I like the fingers under his leg and toes pointing up. Will be exciting to see more detail as you go.
cheers and take care
