Beautiful skin tones in the painting, I like how you’ve painted the leg muscles, good job.
Nice bridgeman studies, the arm and portrait looks pretty good.
The Anatomy Thread of ceruleanvii - 2D
Thanks Miguel, DivineRain, and Annette. Anette, I can totally see your point about the figure drawing - it is a very different sensation (and preferable) to be working on a nice big piece of paper with a stick of charcoal, vs scratching away on my little wacom… The big flaw is that there’s no “undo” button!
DivineRain, I’ll probably work on that last male figure little more and try and cool off some of the shadows, and see if I can fix that leg - I’m told it probably needs some more defined shading underneath, hopefully that’ll help.
Well, my son broke his arm yesterday (ack!
), so no anatomy figure drawing for me this week. But here’s the latest thing I’m working on for my painting class - female figure, glazing technique. I gave Painter a try, but I am still frustrated by the pen pressure at times, so most of it was done Photoshop. As always, comments welcome -

Wow the last one looks great, although her back looks kinda flat overall. Maybe both scapulas should be more prominent?
Also, her feet seem a bit small to me.
This is wonderful already as it is though!
Edit:
I was just preparing myself to sketch in Painter and something suddenly occured to me…
Since you seem to keep having pressure sensitivity probs in Painter… check your layer mode before sketching… for some brushes, Painter seems to switch to “Gel” layer mode when the first line is drawn. It does this with each new layer (eg with the 2B Pencil brush). It’s ennoying to have to switch the layer mode but I don’t know how to avoid this from happening as I think it’s really very brush-related.
Hope this fixes your problem
Looks really good this last one.
Great pinkish skin tones, all the environment is really great.
Good job.
Did you go to Edit > Preferences > Brush Tracking… and adjust the sensitivity there? You can just draw a line there pressing hard with your tablet pen. Never had such problems with Painter…
Amazing figure paintings! I like the skin colors in the last one. Pink looks really neat, even though I really hate pink as a color. Must be the only place where pink looks good on - skin. The overall image is just too hot for my taste. Blue colors in the background as in the male figure painting looked better. But that’s just me.
All in all, great job! I don’t even need to say that.
Hi…Del…
Just popping in to see what you’ve been up to lately…WOW…Your painting and technique just keeps getting better and better…BEAUTIFUL PROGRESS…:applause: ![]()
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Thanks Miguel and Glenn, and thank you Johan and razz for the great feedback!
you’re right about the feet, Johan, I had thought they were looking stubby but you pointing it out gave me impetus to fix them - I added a little more definition to the back too. And razz, you mentioning how hot the colors were got me to try out a different background, this one is more of a cooler dark grey with (sorry
) pink tones - I think it helps cool her down overall. So thanks a lot for both your comments, very helpful!
As far as my Painter woes… I don’t know, maybe I’ve just been using Photoshop for too long. I’ll be cruising along in Painter, I’ll think I’ve got the brush tracking finally figured out, and then I’ll put down a stroke and it will come out much stronger than I ever would have expected… almost arbitrarily, it seems. I’m not going to give up yet, though. Maybe I’ll try it for some of the OFDW hand studies - which I am terribly behind on!

and one more figure painting from this weekend, quicker study, direct painting method -

Woman, your skills are amazing!
about the brush tracker in Painter… I tend to press a fair bit harder than I when I would press it as an average stroke during painting.
The brush tracker tracks your stroke as if you would make a full opaque stroke, which means if you make a light stroke in the brush tracker, you won’t have much pressure sensitivity in your normal painting window. Press it harder than normal and you will have a wider sensitivity range in your normal painting window. You’re right that it does take a bit of figuring out how exactly it works, but once you are used to it, you will get to like it for sure!
Also, experiment with the tracker using different brushes.
Another thing that occurs to me: I think people use lower brush opacity settings in Painter than in Photoshop (I can’t tell coz I only use Painter).
My brush opacity settings are usually never above 50%, often even around 10%
Hi Del! Thanks for passing by my sketchbook thread
Youve got some very nice sketches and drawings here… I particularly like that last guy. Very nice colors.
Keep going!
Hi Del
Wow! the last figure is stunning! I feel you’ve captured his pose beautifully
The woman and the male sitting are great too, but this last one is my favourite
I think because he feels least ‘posing’ of the 3, you have caught that moment and sense of
movement beyond the image - if that makes sense…
sorry to hear about your son’s broken arm
- hopefully he’s
not in pain and can feel excited about gathering ‘cast-autographs’…
take care and cheers
a.
Thanks Calan and Annette! Out of all my figure paintings so far I like this last guy best too.
And thanks Annette for the well wishes for my son! He’s doing much better now, unfortunately the break was high up on the humerus so no cast, just a sling, but he’s quite the celebrity at school anyway - they got to see him whisked away in an ambulance, he’s the talk of the school!
I finally had a chance to get started on the hands workshop. Two down, twenty three to go… I’m kind of looking at this workshop like eating your vegetables - not exactly what you want to be doing, but very, very good for you… My hope is that after I’m done I’ll have a better idea on a) how to construct the hand and b) how to render it (things like the wonderful sub surface scattering and reflected light that artists like Bougereau captured so well). So I’m going to stick with the basics and not get very experimental. Eating my peas, plain, no butter.

Thanks anandpg, and I’m really loving your hand sketches!

Now I need to take a break from hands and get cranking on another figure painting, due much too soon…
H Del
Lovely hands and nice to see your WIP in the workshop as well ![]()
Good luck with your figure painting - time is hard to bargain with…
especially when you have a school-celebrity to entertain as well
cheers

Thanks Annette! It’s been awhile, busy working on this current figure paint.
What I’m trying to work on here is combining a figure painted from photo reference with one of my own backgrounds - how to balance color, lighting, elements, to create something of my own. This is a WIP - needs more contrast in areas, detailing, really want to bring out face/hands, feathers are currently just sketched in, more an afterthought at the moment… As always comments welcome -

Hi Del
This figure portrait is coming along wonderfully :wavey:
I like the feather idea, am assuming you would grow them into full 'wings"?
My only comment at this stage is that he seems to have an almost ‘cross’ intense
expression… I like the intensity, am just curious to know if you want him to look annoyed
that a feather or two fell off? Figure and skin-tones; all is looking stunning!
Lovely to see and look forward to see where he lands
cheers
a.
I think he looks annoyed because he lost his wings Annette?
Maybe he cut them off somehow in a moment of total despair and he is only just now realizing what he has done… that would make sense to me looking at how he is sitting there
Yes, the idea was more along the lines that his wings have been cut off… I have to find a way of making that obvious, without getting too gory… Thanks for the feedback guys!
Hi Del
Now his expression makes sense  thanks
Maybe he should be holding the ‘implement’ that got him into this mess?..
(or maybe it was some other wing-clad being, that clipped his wings? (vaguely visible in the distance…)
Anyways - look forward to seeing where you take him
cheers
a.
I’ve been working on it some more, increased the resolution so I could detail the face and hands. I think I’m going to have tattered wing remnants in place of the cut off ones, I’m working on that now.
