You have a really great shading and you use the colors very well.
Those angles are really lovely and really have a great criativity, great job on them.
This last 2 portraits have a great atmosphere, they look pretty good.
Keep up the good job.

Lovely paintings in here! I like “the lost” piece a lot. Because of the mood and the little girl with black eyes, haha. “Yellow” is nicely done too. I was doing these kind of little environment paintings myself so I can get inspiration and also learn some stuff from seeing yours. Good idea to combine your threads, because I haven’t seen your sketchbook one and regret it now.
Good job!
Thanks for the words of encouragement, Deepam, Glenn, and Miguel. This stuff is challenging me, that’s for sure. And thanks for stopping by, razz, I’ve seen some of your environments in your sketchbook - really nice work!
Ack, it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to add anything here, I’ve been so busy with life and the face & figure painting class. This week’s assignment was to do a black and white value study and glaze over it with color, a method I’ve done before, but the approach to be used was a lot more painterly (for lack of a better word) than the way I usually do it. And at my job they wanted us all to make a self portrait for an upcoming open house for our department (why? because they are cruel sadists). I decided the only way to get it all done in time was to combine the two “assignments” and paint a self portrait. Gack. It’s been painful, I haven’t done one of these since high school. Very hard to be objective about your own face… But I think it’s turned out to be a reasonable likeness, though I appear to be smirking. Maybe I do and I never realized it? Anyhow, here’s me.

Glad that’s over with…
Going to try and do some long-neglected anatomy sketching this week, before the next assigment kicks into full gear…
Very good, great tones and shading. The colors look very good, great composition and the background is quite simple but effective, nicely done.
Well, you got yourself another instant fan…
I’m amazed by the quality of your work.
I think your never ending road of creativity is a nice one
Thanks Miguel and NR43! Road of creativity - I like that phrase
I started a study of one of Paul Cadmus’ drawings, unfortunately I don’t know when I’ll be able to work on it more - the next assigment for the face/figure class has kicked into gear. The arm is giving me grief - must revisit that. Must stop shirking hands and feet too… ![]()
My anatomy figure class resumes this week, which is good because I’ve missed straight figure drawing. And bad because I’ll be even busier. But it’s nice in a way to be so immersed in all this art/drawing again.
Hi there,
Amazing work and colour palettes. Definately going to keep an eye out for your updates
Beautiful work. I especially like how your hatching on the last image follows and turns the form.
Thanks for the comments, Miguel, Venuscia, and Muttonman -
It was good to get back to my figure drawing class, a bit rusty after almost a month away.
Some gestures:

Short one, 20 minutes - not a great drawing, but I liked the pose

another 20 minuter:

Getting frustrated with how long it takes me to plot out the drawing, getting the proportions/measurements close… By the time I’m done (and I usually never get it all completely worked out) there’s no time left to do much in the way of shading and rendering. This happens to me whether it’s a 15 minute pose or an hour. If anyone has any advice, I’m all ears.
Hi Del !!
It’s good to see some quick figure sketches, last one is pretty difficult though you did a good job.
I suggest, doing mannikin pose first before going for details or simple line figure considering center of gravity and angle of weight. That may help figuring out something easily as I think so. Also the weight in muscles will give more good feel to the figure.
If you hvn’t seen artworks of the great artist “RUBENS-Pieter Pauwel”, go for those, there are some wonder figure things to learn. Hope this will help something. ![]()
Thanks Deepam - I’m just hoping that the more I do this, the faster/more accurate I will become.
Here are some of last week’s portraits from the painting class, painted from black&white reference, the goal is to figure out how to paint it in color.
This week we start on the whole figure - should be fun!

HEY …Del…
WOW…GREAT AND BEAUTIFUL PROGRESS HAPPENING IN YOUR THREAD…:applause:
…INSPIRED AND INSPIERING…:bounce:
CAN’T WAIT TO SEE MORE…
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Thanks sycen, Glenn, NR43, nightwoodwolf! The portraits were challenging, but I really enjoyed working on them.
The first two drawings are from figure drawing class last night. I’m trying really hard to get as much drawn as I can in the time allotted - unfortunately they were only about 25 minutes poses each, which for me usually ends up being no hands no feet people
The first one I never had time to shade so I kep it graphic, the second I was able to get a little lighting info sketched in, so I tried to get more of a range of values.
The last one is my current WIP for the face/figure painting class - going to try and finish it up tomorrow. Man, what a difference having several hours vs. 25 minutes makes… Plus a photo reference is of course easier than a live model.
Hmm, wish I had a laptop, I would love to go to my figure class and give my trusty Wacom a shot at live figure painting!

I finished up the painting of the male figure, ok with it overall, minus the extended leg which I just can’t get quite right… This week I need to paint a female figure.

I bought myself a new sketchbook last week, my old one was downright embarrassing
- going to try and make a concerted effort to draw something every day, whether it be sketches, studies, gestures, whatever. I’ve been looking through the Bridgeman book and I must say, I really like the way he breaks down the figure - a few Bridgeman studies:

As always, comments welcome!
great paintings and sketches. I can’t figure out the extended leg… at first I thought there wasn’t anything wrong with it, but the more I kept looking at it, it seems like something is off but I’m not sure what it is. Now it’s kinda bugging me. Great skin tones on these
Hi ceruleanvii
Some great works you have here! I love those portraits
Good thing about figure drawing is that you get to work in a fast
and ‘unprecious’ way, even though it may be fun to bring a laptop to
class, I think you’ll get more from working through the poses on paper
and getting that shoulder rolling - but then that’s just my 2 cents worth
nice sketches and the male figure painting is turning out really well!
cheers and take care
