Lol when I look at my portrait skintones and then see this I can’t help but being in awe.
Damn woman, you got me looking at men and actually liking their forms
PS: I know I’m a nag but I would love to see more traditional work from you Del

Aww, I’ve been waiting to see the rest of that piece, but I will keep waiting for your next epic environmental piece with awesome figures.
Personally, I’d be very happy if you continue with your strategically placed naked dude ;). But I’m sure you’d also paint an awesome epic environment.
You have so many amazing details in your paintings - I’m in awe of your skin tones. I also love the demon’s malevolent expression!
Great colour scheme in your Xenon piece! A series of elements would be cool.
It riles me to here people have panned your work because of your subject matter. With so many nude female paintings around it’s refreshing to see someone who does male nudes so well. Those people are insecure hypocrites. I’m glad to see you’ve moved on from them. Please keep doing what you love doing!!!
Hi guys, long time no updates! Been busy… I’m currently taking Robert Chang’s Becoming a Better Artist workshop, and it’s quite interesting - I recommend it. Unfortunately I’ve had two other big projects going on at the same time as the workshops so I haven’t been able to put in same amount of effort that I have with other workshops. One of my projects is a article that should be coming out in the June issue of ImagineFX on a fantasy male figure, with a focus on anatomy and skintone rendering. The other is a bookcover for a historical novel. Both have been a lot of fun to work on, and it’s been a nice little foray into doing 2D art professionally. Still going to keep doing 3D for a living though
something from the workshop - painted from photo reference, the focus of the lesson was surface and texture. Made myself play around with lots of brushes I never use normally.

When the projects I mentioned above are publicized I’ll post them -

Interesting work on the male figure. I like the background it helps it out alot. The seaside study is coming along nicely.
Good to see you back here, Del!
I like how you handled water in this one. I really struggled with it when I was doing mine.
Can’t wait to see your ImagineFX article!
Wow awesome news Del!
About your last study, just curious but was the far background hill on the right as dark in value as you painted it? Seems to me it could have been much lighter in value, closer to the value of the sky. That would have seemed more “natural” to me. It’s something I would change if the ref photo díd show that hill as dark as you painted it. What do you think?
thanks guys! Johan, that’s actually not a hill but a small pile of rocks. I guess it’s rather ill defined, in general the whole right side of the painting is weak - guess I kinda ran out of steam at that point
Lovely seascape Del! It’s great to hear you’re getting some work in 2D art. I look forward to seeing your ImagineFX piece and bookcover!
The workshop is out in ImagineFX 57. It’s about creating a male fantasy figure with a focus on anatomy and skintone, here’s one of the breakdowns.

It was a pleasure to work on this for so many reasons… a lot of work but a lot of fun! If you do happen to pick up the issue let me know what you think!
Wow, that looks awesome! I really need to learn the muscles…if those muscle names were left blank, I would have only gotten three right.
Thanks for the sneak peak. Looking forward to seeing the full article.
Been trying to find a place to buy that issue, although I’ll order online if I have to.
You have some wonderful work here, Del!
Thanks Wes! just don’t ask me all the forearm muscles - they’re a tangled mystery
Thanks Heather! My Borders has the issue in stock right now, if you’ve got one near you (if you do see it, take a look at the spine - very funny
). It’s a great issue, and the vampire cover is such a nice change of pace.
I finished this recently, a wrap around book cover for “Eadric the Grasper” by Jayden Woods. It was fun but challenging because 1) I had to design the image to fit the existing text template (black spine bisects image, title, author’s name, subtitle, back cover blurb, bar code) and make sure nothing crucial was obscured while nothing competed with the text 2) clothing, clothing, so much historically accurate clothing, and chain mail too! 3) many lighting issues. I learned a lot from this one.

Here’s the author’s site about the book, if anyone is interested. It’s a historical fiction set in 11th century England and a great read, I really got into it, which certainly helped make the painting part very enjoyable -
Excellent thread! My only comment is that I love your drawings & sketches and would like to see more of those as well. Inspiring work!
Hi Del
I’ve been away from here for ages (again) but finally found some time to revisit today - wow your updates are simply awesome! I love your male fantasy figure :arteest:
cheers and hope all is well
a.
Congrats on the finished image - it looks great!
I guess my local Borders is slow. They’re still stuck carrying the May issue for some reason. I’ll get on their case about it.
Thanks guys! Been awhile since I posted anything but I have been busy painting. This first one was a lighting experiment I started and was encouraged to finish - strong cool light from the sides making a dark core, but glowing within. I also wanted some practice with female anatomy. I’ve been told the breasts are too big, but others seem to like them
I do like painting curvy but natural looking women - not rail thin, not exaggerated proportions, both of which I see too much of in most famale depictions in art these days. Plus it’s almost Halloween, she’s a little spooky, isn’t she?

Next one, some fan art for the woman I painted the book cover for - this is one of the characters from a short story she wrote - in summary, a conflict between the old Norse religion as symbolized by Odin and his ravens, vs Christianity. As you can see, the raven is not faring so well.

Next one, just a quick sketch from a magazine - loved the look of this model for St John’s dresses. But doing this sketch got me thinking about an old painting I had started and given up on…

This last one is a WIP I quit in disgust and frustration over a year ago. But after looking at it again, I decided it didn’t suck as badly as I thought and I’ve been working on it over the past few weeks. It’s called “union of flame” and it’s about, well, marriage. When I was married we did a candle lighting ceremony, where we each had a small lit candle and together we used them to light a large one. Kinda hokey, but I loved the symbolism. So this painting is about two souls joining as one, in love, passion, commitment, and all that other stuff that happens when you bond with your soulmate. Got a ways to go with it, need to work on the fire, and i want more intertwining between the blue and gold. It’s been a tough one! Hard to find references for something like this. Should keep me busy for the next few weeks…

Beautiful works Dell, and getting better all the time…which is always a great thing to see…:applause:

Maybe some greens and purples in those flames and more snake forked tonque like ends on the flames to get that sense of rhythmic flow that makes flames dance with movement…Just a passing thoughts that may or may not be useful to you…Just thought them worth mentioning,…just in case they may be…
Take Care Dell…![]()

Hi Del,
I’m really pleased to see how powerful your color usage is, most people tend to screw up and fail to depict a serene atmosphere when using such strong colors, but you pull this off every time!
I will stick with my critique that your men look too ambiguous, be it due to the haircut, the thick round lips, or the round chin/jaw. On the other hand, if they represent what you want them to, they are just fine, right?
In your last WIP, there’s a lot of energy in the hair, suggesting movement, but the candle flames are very static. Maybe make the flames turn around the same axis as the blue hairstrands in the front?
Just thinking out loud (I’m really not in a position to critique).
Awesome to see you post here again!
