The Anatomy Thread of ceruleanvii - 2D

#201

Hi guys! Well, it’s certainly been awhile. I’m feeling a lot better these days, thanks everyone for your comments and well wishes!

And I’m ready to start working seriously on my painting skills again - things have kind of been at a standstill. So here’s some of what I’ve been working on over the past few weeks -

part af a larger painting - face of an angel, of sorts

and a quick landscape painting, inspired by personal refs and Hopper -

I’m still really fascinated by color and light and would love to just work with those, but I know that I really need to beef up my perspective and composition skills. So we’ll see if I remain lazy and keep doing what I like, or start to challenge myself. No promises!

I need to catch up with a bunch of people’s sketchbooks, will try and do so later !

#202

Hi Del, good to hear you are doing better. Great updates. I like the colors in that last one.

#203

Hi Del

Great to see you back again :wavey:
& lovely updates too! Can see that this is an angel of ‘sorts’ the eyes and
hair are sublime   Oh it all is!
Challenges can be good from the perspective that you never know where they’ll lead you,
sort of morphing what you like and strive towards with the problem solving contained in the ‘unknown’

keep posting and stay well

Hi Del…

BEAUTIFUL WORK…:bounce: :applause:

TAKE CARE Del
Glenn

#205

Hi Del!
You’re sounding great and your work is looking good!
Coolio!!

#206

Glad you’re back! I believe I saw your work in ImagineFX, congrats on that!
I like this environment of yours. Thought you’re more of a figure painter, but you can do environments as well and it looks amazing. Thanks for posting the inspiration.
Cheers!

#207

Thanks Batte, Glenn, Johan, nice to be back and see you all!

Annette, thanks, I’ve been working on the angel (and a lil demon too) over the past week and I’m hoping to have the whole painting done by end of September. And then maybe I’ll try challenging myself

Thanks for the congrats Razz, I was pretty excited to have my work shown in IFX! I like doing figures, but I also like environments, they’re a lot quicker. What I need to work on is integrating a full size figure in a detailed, realistic, perspective-accurate environment. Now when I can do that, I’ll really feel like I’ve accomplished something.

the other character in the angel painting

There are a few things I want to fix up in the painting overall before I add it to my gallery, mostly wing issues with the both of them. I’ve found wings are tough, anatomically, because you’ve got your bird wings, and you’ve got your bat wings, but they’re attached to bird and bat bodies. There are no real refs of such wings on human bodies  just artist’s creative interpretations of such.

I’ve started work on another more environmental type piece and will post when it’s further along -

Just got back from a wonderful week at the beach. But I was Photoshop-deprived, so I decided to do some regular old pencil studies and sketches. Its been a long time since I have done anything like that - I forgot how unforgiving traditional media is (no undo key!) but it was challenging in a fun way. I have to do more.

So some studies with a 2B, 4B, a stick of graphite, and a kneaded eraser.

did cheat a do a little photoshop on the backgrounds of this one -

superb work man…
keep it up.
I’m loving the painting…really strong composition.
keep it up

thanks longhi, thanks xsiyou!

been a long time since I updated here… I have been painting, though not as much as I like. Finished up the angel-with-demon-baby and added it to my gallery. It was well received here and over at DeviantArt, where it got a DD, and panned by some professional illustrators that saw it  I think they thought it was well-painted but despised the subject matter. Which kind of clearly delineates for me my old art dilemma - do I keep painting what I like, for me, or do I think about doing professional work one day in the future and start working on things that have more universal appeal? I keep telling myself, when this is more frustrating than fun, it will be time to quit. And I keep hitting more of the former these days…

this was a quick one that WAS fun. I wanted to practice painting dark skin tones, and women, both of which I have not done much of. She evolved into Xenon, the 54th element of the periodic table. One of the noble gases, she is normally invisible, but in the presence of electricity emits a bluish-lavender glow.

I was considering doing a series of these. I have a million ideas of things to do but they’re my usual no-commercial-potential ones, so I just dunno…

Hi Dell…

Beautiful, Mysterious, Magical…:bounce:

After reading what you just wrote, I think that you might find a book that I read awhile back very interesting and very useful to helping solve your delema…

Book Title…The Way of the WIZARD
Twenty Spiriual Lessons for Creating the Life You Want

Author…DEEPAK CHOPRA

It’s a great little book, and is tailor fit for helping to solve the kind of problem that you described.

TAKE CARE
Glenn

#214

thanks Glenn, I will check it out.

ack, this dilemma has pretty much incapacitated me. Not sure if I need to take a break, or maybe I’m just done.

#215

I think you should keep doing what you like doing.
I think if you paint things you don’t particularly like, for someone else, sooner or later it will show in your work. Paint for yourself!

Would love to see that million of ideas visualized, even though they are not as commercial as you think they are. You got more than one DD at DA already, that means there is a public that likes your work

Just my 2c…

#216

Hey Del!! How are you doing? Great to see you back!

#217

Hi guys!

Happy holidays!

well, my muse has returned, somewhat… been working on another realistic figure study with a more complex background and storyline. But I took a break from that over the past few days to do a little experiment with line, color, form, stylisation, kind of Nagel meets art nouveau meets messy Del  Twas fun and festive!

dirty geisha

as far as what I’ve decided to do about my long term art goals… screw ever doing this professionally. I’m sticking with being a hobbyist. I may see if I can pick up some character-based commissions in the new year, but life is too short to wrack myself over twisting my art to be what someone else thinks it should.

Happy 2010 - may this New Year bring us all health, joy, and love.

#218

Heh great to hear you made your choice Del!
And it’s very nice to see that you aren’t limited by style.

Best of luck for the upcoming new year!

#219

Hi Dell…:wavey: …Glad to see you back in action… :arteest:

Some people are born with a wild and free spirit, which only dies when caged…

TAKE CARE Dell…
Glenn

Thanks Johan, thanks Glenn - I think you are right, you’re certainly quite the free spirit yourself!

Wrapping this one up… it’s been fun, yet another supernatural religious renaissance inspired figure study - or as someone else recently said, more strategically posed naked dudes

I originally planned to have this one take place in a more elaborate environment. But the more I worked on the character, the more he developed a kind of… quiet malevolence, which was getting lost when he was a small part of a bigger picture.

So I’ve ended up keeping him the focus, with a simple background, but hopefully with enough details to make it interesting and tell a bit of a story… we study the demon and feel safe because he is imprisoned within his circle. But the demon is also studying us, and upon closer observation we see there are breaks in the circle, little bits of the demon are escaping…

One of these days I’m going to be able to combine an epic environment with a beautiful expressive character and have them both look awesome. In the meantime, I’ll have to be content with my strategically posed naked dudes.
