The Anatomy Sketchbook of Mxyzptlk (2d/3D)

#1

I always say I keep updating my threads and artwork but like many 'a new year’s resolutions they only last a few days before you revert back to your old ways :O. That said I’ll try my hardest to keep adding and improving on my art work…
I hope.
I’ll be adding some of my old work to give this thread some padding but also some fresh new works too that hopefully you gals and guys like along with any crits and comments you might have.

I was near the V&A and decided to pop in to sketch some of the sculptures they have.
I felt abit odd being the only one standing there drawing and attracting a large crowd of tourist looking over my shoulder and security guards circling me like Sharks. :stuck_out_tongue:

Whenever I’m near the National Gallery I always hop in to do some sketching and this painting: Samson and Delilah by Rubens is one of my favourite to sit down and draw.

A quick sketch of sawn plus pigeon fly in Hyde park.

Some 3D now and a work that I want to get finished the most. Looking at my old post for this I’m really proud of how this is coming along; abet alittle embarrassed on how many times I quit working on it.
Here are the early versions of this sculpt which I did entirely using Zspheres (a first for me)

Since then I’ve improved it hell’a alot and possibly started over from scratch more than once. It’s evolved from a weird Bird/Griffin type man to a alien Space Superhero.

There are a few things that I’d like to fix like the waist area (possibly it could do with some widening along with the thighs) the forearms too, though I think it’s the extend length that’s making it look off to me. I’m thinking of adding some bulky gloves that will hopefully compensate for that along with some boots to match. The thing I’m not so sure about is the tail… I don’t know why I added it and I can’t think of a exciting way for it to be included into the suit without it looking like it’s a hole just cut out the back ie: long johns with a butt flap…:stuck_out_tongue:

any suggestions?

Working on detailing the head with all the wrinkles and stuff, something is bugging me about this and it’s the bug-eyes. I don’t know why I didn’t do this before but I just put in some simple spheres when I was sculpting and now when it came time to add detail to them to they just look weird. Though I wanted that large Eagle eye for this character it’s mainly it’s the scale of them that’s throwing me off.

I think this is fantastic. The guy really has some character to him. If you are looking for an “eagle” eye I think that you need to keep it more rounded instead of the almond shape of the human eye… I found this great close-up of a bald eagle eye if you want to use it for reference.

I look forward to more updates on this one. Will you take him farther than modeling?

btw,… your sketches are fantastic as well… it is nice to see the mixture of 3d and hand drawing.

This character really looks great. The eyebags I think look fine. Bags under eyes should always be no bigger than the eyesockets, just an interesting thing to know.

#8

Thanks Mistfit I really appreciate the comments. lol as soon as I posted the last post did a alittle research with Eagle eyes in mind and I got that photo too and ahella alot of Shia Labeouf pictures :stuck_out_tongue: Last night I worked on making the eyes more circular and… they looked like goggles. I think the eyes look fine as sphere; just that when I sculpted the iris/ large pupils like the reference picture it looks off to me. Not sure why… until this morning when whilst watching The Muppet Christmas Carol I realised …that it’s Sam the Eagle.:surprised

:stuck_out_tongue:
I’m planning to texturing this and posing it up, I did some very rough polypaint in Zbrush on how I could possibly texture this. Zombie-ish but this what I came up with this so far.

#9

thanks mister 3d! it I tried to decrease the eyebags more and I think it actually helps, though I might actually cheat and by giving him a mask. It does obscure some of the details but then again I think it works to frame the face better.

#10

A very quick sculpt I did in a day or so mainly so I can practice texturing in Zbrush. I kinda rushed it towards the end and the hands/ arms are a mess (sort of ran out of steam there) but I’m kinda of proud of it’s outcome.

#11

Textured version!!!

I decided to close his mouth since it looked weird but looking at it now I think I could do it better.

#12

Started the detailing on this character. I did many version of the skin from leathery to super scaley and this is a happy medium of the two. Though I like it I get this little niggle that I’ve over done it.

#13

update on the skin texture. I’m building up the layers on skin layers and probably might need to add to more.

#14

I’ve been working on posing this character and rigging it has been tough. I know the anatomy is off but I don’t know where to begin. any Comments or Crits would help me a great deal

#15

Started this earlier in the week and I’m taking forever on the arms and upper back… just can’t seem to get it right. Any suggestions?

#16

Working on this again and I think I’ve sorted out the arms but now I’m stuck on the face.

#17

A work in progress for a print I hope to eventually sell later on.
