Texturing does now show in the render nor viewport

#1

So im getting frustrated by trying to solve this problem and need your help on this.
First of all im using Maya 2011, Mentalray for rendering and only a IBL to light my scene.
My problem is that whenever i Plug a textureFile into my Material Diffuse slot, the Materialpreview seem fine (you can see the texture applied) but I cant see the texture in the Viewport nor does it show up in the rendering… Im using MIA_material_x btw

I hope you guys can help me solve this problem, since i tried everything i could imagine of that could be the evil of this

Thx

This is a pretty straightforward issue. What’s happening (likely) is that you have no Surface Material set in your Shading Group for those objects. Each shaded object has a Shading Group (or if they have the same materials/shaders, they’ll share one) in Maya. In the Shading Group are multiple slots for connecting up your shaders. It will look something like this:

What you’re seeing there is a standard Blinn material as the Surface material, and then the mia_mat_x (mia_cabwood_x1 here) in the proper slots for the mental ray materials. mental ray ignores the Blinn, but Maya’s viewport sees it!

So my standard workflow is to create a Blinn, Phong, or Lambert for each new material before setting up the mia_material. Then if I need to render in Maya’s native software renderer, it’s all set up, and since I link the same texture files to both the Blinn and the mia_mat_x, updating the textures for one updates them both. I tend to make my Blinns/Phongs/Lamberts look similar enough in terms of specularity, transparency, etc. so that in the Viewport it gives a decent visual reference for layout purposes, too.
