Texturing an Atom in 3DS Max

Hi
could anyone help me with the right process of texturing a swirling atom (to be animated) in 3DS Max+VRay? I basically need some energy to move from the core of the atom to its surface (which will be a sphere). I tried with vray light material with noise (Blend material) but not getting the right output

I imagine you are looking for something like this?

I am afraid there may not a simple way to to this in shader, but you will probably need to make geometry that actually is the electrical arches.

You could do this with splines or shapes with noise on them, or you could do this with particles. On one of my projects this was done with particles that were spawned in the center and were seeking an exterior location.

Wow! Yes this is something I have in mind though your image is much intricate and detailed (and great). I was trying to avoid using Particles (no specific reason though), but it would be great if you can throw more light on the spline process.
