Hi Squibbit,

Lol! Like I said, I’m open to ideas from the forum for this one… :scream: I would like to see a quick sketch of this idea - to show the goldsmith along with paperclips, just to see what she would say…

cheers man - you rock on!

My first “throw-away” idea. Took all of about 10 minutes - just to show you guys I am thinking about this…

I want something lots better than the image below... just needed to get that first drawing out of my system.

I really like that sketch! The pointy bits might hurt/pinch flesh though? Not to nitpick, but you want to make sure it’s super comfy, especially if she’s going to be wearing it for the rest of her life! (A lot of women wear their engagement ring alongside their wedding ring) I like the idea of blending the two different metals together. I may actually post another idea I have for a design later, if you wouldn’t mind?

Hi Paperclip,

I was thinking about those pointy bits myself… don’t want it to be too painful for her to wear! (tho a little pain never hurt anyone… <joke>;))

Will try to get multiple concepts out on here soon, probably in more detail than that last one aswell. (Though I dont want to get too bogged down just yet.)

Please feel free post another ring concept if you have time, I need all the help I can get :D...

Thank you again - your a great help!

Here are some more “first impressions” for ths:

Done at around 11:45pm GMT,well past my bedtime, while reading a book. (I am also learning to multi-task at the moment! :D)

EDIT:

Dont know if there are any metallurgists amongst the CGSociety members  but here goes -

Does anyone know if you can electroplate gold? I was dreaming that I had made a ring that looked like white gold, but had a design etched into the surface that exposed the “yellow” gold underneath! It looked well cool!! :scream: I will be asking the goldsmith on Tuesday, but if anyone knows in advance then I would be more than interested.

Cheers

You CAN electroplate gold, but it wears away after a while. (see electroplated silver jewellery, it wears away and looks awful) One option you could use is to use a mould and cast the ring in two stages. I like that idea though, the one of having an etched design. I also like your last design, it’s not as geometric as the previous ones and I think it looks more feminine. You will have to have a deep setting for the diamond though, they are not just glued in you know!!

Wow Paperclip,

You are a mind of information on this topic - have you ever made your own jewellrey?

My meeting is scheduled for 11am tomorrow with the Goldsmith, and she has got some stuff to show me that she claims will inspire me to new heights, (I hope thats true.)

I will also be taught the basics of ring construction including clasps for the diamond - didn’t know there are so many different ways to hold them things on with - glue sounds loads better!

We will see what my next batch of designs look like then.

Thanks for the great C&C so far Paperclip - it is VERY much appreciated.

Just got back from an inspiring morning with the goldsmith. She has shown me loads of really beautiful pieces from around the world, and some of her own works (see images below.)

We are aiming to have this project completed for around the first week in December, so that we have time incase anything “random” happens during the process… We went out on to the mean streets of Middlesbrough to look at the engagement rings there and to find out what I liked and disliked. I now know that I DONT want a broad band for the ring, and I am either going for 1 larger, or three smaller diamonds in a claw setting or inset.

We also had a quick “mind mapping” session and had some initial thoughts which I am going to draw up and post here, (and also send to her.)

Will have these on-line soon (I hope) for the forum to C&C.

 MIKE

EDIT: Costing

Estimated from initial thoughts

White Gold and Yellow Gold (18 or 22 carat) £150 - 200

Diamond(s) £200 - 400 (depending on the 4 C’s - <cut, carat, colour and clarity>)
Her construction fees £130 - 200 (including Hallmarking)

So it looks like it could be anywhere between £480 - 800, (thats around US$860 - 1,430) depending on what I decide upon. Does that sound reasonable to anyone?
