Tentacle rigging?

#1

I’ve tried following tail tutorials, but I need to make a tentacle rig for a squid. I’ve only found one thing to use and it was an automatic generation through a script. Didn’t work too well for a whole rig.

Does anyone have any advice?

Uhmm have you tried spline ik? I think it’s the best tool for something that moves and blends in every direction; they probably used it on the tail tutorials but take a look at this one, I understood how to use it thanks to this guy:

You haven’t posted the tutorial you’ve already seen. Have you tried tentacle script?

I think it might be useful although I haven’t tested it by myself.
There are many ways to rig this kind of stuff. Depends on what you need. Maybe dynamic simulation. Here is a great tutorial on how to make nHair simulation with a switch to control things manually: http://vimeo.com/8240821
Or you need very simple cartoony effect and then wave or sine deformer would be sufficient.

Hey, you can check out a short demonstration that I made for creating procedural joint chain over here: [VIMEO]12313768[/VIMEO]

You can also download the script here: http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/script/srb-procedural-chain

I would suggest you blend the procedural rig with control rig for maximum control and add dynamic setup on top. Good luck!
