Tablet Necessary?

Hey pretty straight forward question. I’ve been interested in starting matte painting and was wondering if buying a tablet is necessary. I have the money but what are your opinions?

Yeah I couldn’t imagine doing any computer graphics without a tablet. And the new Wacom Introus 4s look pretty sweet too!

necessary? it is a must have for ANY matte painter, the number 2 tool after photoshop , once you get to work with it, you will never go back…

I can only agree with Matt and Jaime. If you have the money, dont hesitate. Get a good one tho. Wacom is the way forward. If you buy a good Wacom tablet then it will last
for a long time and quickly become an indispensable tool!

I friend of mine works as a professional mattepainter using a mouse, he has a tablet but prefers a mouse. However, the benefits of using a tablet is that you can use photoshops full capacity when painting which can never be done with a mouse alone. Also, you can paint very precise with a tablet.

I also agree that if your really serious in doing digital art in general, a tablet is your next best tool aside from photshop. Wacom makes the best tablet, I’m just using a low-end graphire 3 tablet but it has lasted me for 4 years, so don’t mind the price, get the quality. I’m also due for a new Wacom 4 which I do to get one soon… Darn 500D cameras… heheheh

Alright thanks a lot guys. I’ve been looking at the new Wacom 4 so I’ll prob go with that.

Wow I didnt think anyone would be able to get a good enough quality with only a mouse. Do they strickly do image manipulation? I would be very interested in checking out their portfolio! Do they have any images online?

That’s what I was going to say. You just don’t get the smooth organic feel with a mouse as compared to a tablet.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply. Well to be honest, He actually paints with a mouse (2D painting of people, environments etc). We have tried asking him to use his wacom (at work) bu he doesn’t, well sometimes he does but not too often say once every few weeks when the boss is looking HAHA.

Hes Chinese and doesn’t have an online account or gallery ofr his works so it would be hard to show you what he has done, but level of quality is very good. Thats probably why he got a job for ILM :slight_smile:
