Hi guys. I did this one using some photo reference for the character, I tried to paint this ‘‘moment’’ in a wintery mood while keeping it very ‘‘sunny’’ and bright. I wonder what’s not right because it was yet again refused for cgtalk…
thanks
Sun & Snow
You basically have 3 options to getting your work showcased. First, the image can be carried by content. It needs to be creative or have an interesting message. Or, second, it needs to be well crafted. The 3rd option, the most well received option, is a work that is a combination of both.
Your image is mundane. It is not creative, as it doesnt present a unique, let alone an interesting situation, nor does it convey an interesting message. As a painting, it has the quality of a rudimentary sketch.
When you flirt with the threshold of quality acceptance, all kinds of interesting and unexpected things can happen. Although the image you linked to, for quality comparison, was submitted in February 2010, long before the Showcase quality bar raising event of 2011.
I’m not as well versed in the inner workings of the gallery selection process. But I do agree with Bill, Quadart, your Sun & Snow piece looks like a sketch. The image you pointed out that was admitted into the gallery in 2010 looks more “finished”.
I’m not sure I agree with Bill on the mundane part. As it stands now, it’s boring because it seems very flat. It looks a lot like the portraits I work on around the midway point in my workflow. There needs to be definition, something to allow the viewer to discover things - the texture of the hair, the texture of the coat fringe, etc. The eyes look a little lifeless. We see a hint of a smile which there should be some interplay between the smile and the eyes.
Yea thanks for these last crits
I appreciate! I agree it<s like a sketch!.. I’m not familiar with pushing it to the limit of ‘‘final realism’’… but ok I get it! But I agree the eyes and mouth’s smile dont connect to each other somehow… + I should try to give it more volume , it might look a bit flat, I agree… Thanks
