Sun rise color and other questions

#1

Hello,

I am creating an environment scene with physical sun&sky( maya, mental ray)
I want to create the mood of sun rise. I researched about it and I couldn’t really tell the differences of color between sun rise and sun set.
So I need advice from experts. How can I make sun rise mood??
When I look at my scene, it’s hard to tell whether it’s sun rise or sun set…
I don’t know what to tweak with physical sun&sky to create sun rise mood?
Anyone can give me advice?

Thank you

I’m happy to be proven wrong, but surly they are the same thing (color wise).

Yes, although I would expect that living in a city–or directly to the east of one–you would expect sunsets to be redder than sunrises due to all the particulates released into the atmosphere during the day by cars and such.

My friend gave me suggestion that sun rise is more like desaturated and soft color tone, and sun set is more saturated and strong. Any opinion on this?
The scene is a house where located very high altitude mountain. Sun is rising and the sun shine hit the house.
This is the scene with simple texture applied. I still need to fix lot of things, but here is the image. Please give me some advice what to tweak.
Thank you very much.

edited to add: ^^^^ that’s looking pretty good already, although I bet you could push the skylight a little more blue, especially in such a stylized scene. <end edit>

As others have mentioned, sunrise and sunset are optically identical, unless you’re in an industrialized area where most of the particulates get released during the day.

They don’t feel the same though, and since lighting is all about evoking feeling, I think it’s fine to differentiate the two. Typically for morning I would use slightly cooler colors than for evening, and also have more fill light relative to the sun. Subtle environmental cues can also help sell time-of-day, such as a sheen of dew on plants, or some thin mist clinging close to the ground.

Anothing factor to consider is your sky. Clouds in the morning are typically going to be thinner cirrus or patchy fog, whereas you usually won’t see big towering cumulonimbus until afternoon.

Thank you so much for the reply.
Yes, I think cooler light will be better suit for sun rise scene. I was going to add cloud in the scene…or I guess I will try to add thin mist.
What is good method to add cloud or mist? I was thinking to use just back ground image and add cloud in photoshop…

You’re using Maya, right? Maya fluids are actually great for quickly creating mist and clouds. If you haven’t used them before, check out some tutorials. I haven’t used Maya in a long time, but I remember having a lot of fun with fluids.

Ok, I will try to use it. Um…I hope it’s not that time consuming
Thank you.
