Suggestion for new PC hardware

#1

Hey guys, long time reader here getting ready to separate from my current company and start my own studio. I’m leaving with full blessings from my current company and the option to purchase the PC that I’ve been using for the past couple years. The question that I have is do I buy the PC that I’ve been using (3yrs old specs below) or would I be better served by buying something new for the same cost or less?

Current PC - Offered selling price $1500

Video Card: Nvidia Quadro M4000
Processor: Intel i7 5930K @ 3.5 ghz
Ram: 64 gb 2133mhz (not sure of the actual type)

I know that’s a monster video card but I also know I can get a lot for $1500 in a desktop these days.

Thanks for the input guys!

The videocard is 5 years old (at least it was released in 2015), so there’s no warranty. It is discontinued, and though it was a nice videocard for its time, it’s still overpriced, and the used one should cost around 200$.

The new aforementioned processor costs 300$, and considering that one is old, it should cost half of it, 150$.

The RAM of that amount and speed is 200$ new, so it should cost half of it used - 100-150$ top.

So we get 500$ cost of those components. They cherged you 3x more than it costs. Make your judgement.

Regarding new components, it’s difficult to buy a decent system just for 1500 today. But it depends on what programs you use. Could you elaborate which programs you use and for what?

It is expected that the new Nvidia lineup of videocards will be released in the upcoming months, so I would really suggest waiting to buy a new RTX 3000 card. They are new, so more durable, have support for RTX cores (mx 4000 doesn’t), and will come with at least 8 gb of video ram (the same, as in that old card, which was a lot, and now is a minimum, as you can see). Video ram is the most crucial part you should look for, if you do any texturing or rendering. Also RTX cores might give some perks in the foreseeable future, like speeding up rendering et cetera.

Regarding RAM, it also depends on your needs. 64 GB of RAM is a decent amount for a solo artist. Unless you work on heavy scenes, make 8k videos, video editing and so on.

There’s nothing said about SSD, which should be in your system unstead of HDD.

For processors, in recent years AMD made much more powerful and speedy processors than Intel, and they are cheaper in terms of speed per dollar. It’s up to you, but look for Ryzen Threadripper 3nd Gen processors. They ARE expensive, but they are the beast in terms of rendering speed. The system with threadripper might cost 3-4k dollars for the processor, motherboard and the cooling (and maybe RAM to the bulk), but it’s a great investment, and Intel has nothing close in that renge (it would cost around 20k in Intel department).
If you are not keen on making such s powerhouse, you can buy a cheaper processor, and get it around 1200$ for the processor, motherboard and RAM. Maybe some kind of top Ryzen processors, I can’t suggest here, as I didn’t research this particular question. That processor will be at least 3x faster than that old processor they are selling you a bill of goods.

Not sure what software you use, but you might want to check if it actually benefits from a Quadro at all. Geforce offer more value for the money for many software-applications.
