Subtool merging problem

#1

Hi, I’m currently working on a game which has mechs in it, so making models for the game, i usually run it through zbrush creating multiple subtools to work with individual parts (upper arm, lower arm, wapon for example), the problem I’m having is that when i have done the details I wish to merge the subtools together again to have all these parts share one texture, this has proven to be quite a probem (seeing how zbrush dislikes merging subtools with many subdivisions). Is there something I’m doing that is a weird approach and how would you guys deal with this problem?

F.y.i. how i solved this last time was that i exported every subtool as a seperate object with maps and merged them in maya and combined the normal map in photoshop, the only real problem with this is that it was very time consuming and i were unable to merge anything more than the normal map (it would be possible to merge that other maps as well but i simply don’t have that timeframe). And of course i moved the uv so that is fitted the new normal map.

Thanks in advance! :keenly:

All those maps on individual pieces! Great detail!! Big file , hard to rig! I wound up with two versions ! One multi piece hi res, multi tool. and One where I merged tools , created one map in c4d, went back and projected onto new mesh, lower res, not as pretty, but easier to rig! Its a pain , and have been looking at changing my work flow. Awaiting 4r7 before I do much more! They may have some new tools , to work around this problem! My website has examples, in the character page , on past work low and hires. A lot of extra work ,will not be doing that again. Not much help I know ! Dj
