Subpatch video - how to create threads on a bottle / screw

#1

I just finished up one more video tutorial…

Creating bottle / screw threads using subpatch / subdivision surface modeling -
This video shows how to create the threading you would find on a bottle or a screw using supatch / subdivision surface modeling. The video also demonstrates how to fix a few common problems that may arise during the modeling process. The final lwo model (which is available for download) is composed of all quads.

Application: Lightwave 9.3 / File size: 28.3MB / Length: 17:30

Never thought to do it that way…I’ve always created it flat and then bent it around into a disc shape…interesting method!

#3

That’s interesting, William. I actually thought of doing it that was but I was unsure of the best way to get the flat object wrapped into a perfect cylinder. I’d be curious to see it done your way.

It’s great to have many options to do the same thing!

I’ll put something together…and I agree…I lovethat there are so many ways to do things…

Big thanx for the videos…soon we’ll have a 24 hour block of training

^Thanks! That’s a great method as well!!

Ty for the tutorials. I just wished they’ve existed two years ago when i did this bulb.

At the time i was completely new to LW and do that bulb was pain. First to find out how i would do the threads. I came out with an idea that was similar to william’s, bending a net. Altough i commited the mistake of doing the insets and subpatch before i bend it, the bend went fine, but finihishing those ends, almost made me quit. And seeing william finishing the ends like that, kinda pisses me off :stuck_out_tongue: ( by the way that electric beam was done following electric_CD.mov tutorial^^)

Jeffry while i was doing the thread your way and i watched the problems you had with drill, and got me thinking: ‘I could solve that faster :P’

I did one tutorial once, just for fun, about animating flat characters in LW, trying to do what Flash does just inside LW, but its in portuguese language. The result:

Tutorials are really cool. Keep them coming.

^that bulb looks great!

Yeah, you’re right, using extender plus/merge would be pretty quick. To be honest, I’m still not familiar with many of LW’s tools. I still have a tendancy to think like I’m using Silo and Wings for many of the task that I need to do. I’ll be very very happy when they (NT) start to merge the tools together into more powerful single tools rather than a thousand tools that do individual things.

Thanks for posting that other work around though!

Also, someone on another fourm pointed out that I could have select that 2-point poly by using the statistics menu and then just hit the delete key…

always learning I tell ya!

#10

You didn’t knew about statistics to delete 2 point poly? thats quite shocking :stuck_out_tongue: When on the video you say “There must be better ways to clear 2 point poly” i was thinnking that you knew about statistics but you wanted to show the actually 2 pointpoly and not just delete it.

In most cases, if im not working with 2pointpoly, i go often while modeling to statistics checking for 2pointpoly and 1 point vertexs, cause i got a sloppy modeling :stuck_out_tongue:

Keep them coming.

Yeah, I said that because at the time I did know there had to be a better way but I just wasn’t thinking of it. Many times I know what and how I want to model but it’s a matter of me figuring the best way to do it in LW. I know I can select them that way, but I just wasn’t sure what the problem was at the time so I didn’t think to look there. I have to be better about looking for 2pt polys and single verts when I model.

None of the other 3d software apps I’ve used ever had 2pt polys so they are kind of a new element for me to watch out for.

Any even faster way would be to use the “Bridge Tool”

Select the edges on each side and use “Bridge”

Fixed in no time

#13

^ohh… damn you… lol

Now that sounds like a grand idea! doh! For now on I’m going to title my vid - how to do things the most convoluted compex way! lol (just kidding)

Thanks William for the tip!!!

#14

Your setup is far from convoluted…There are plenty of time I use booleans and Drill to cut in a shape then clean it up to make it 4 point subpatch friendly. Most people dont think to do it and your video is a perfect example…I’m glad the community has you as a resource…your makin ga big difference IMHO.

Major thanx for all your efforts! Keep em’ coming!

Nice work on the tutorial fellas. I always enjoy watching different ways of skinning the proverbial cat.

#16

Never used Bridge on edges, nice tip William :F
