Struggling to achieve a specific look!

So the story goes like this.

I’ve created a model in Maya having recently moved over from 3dsmax. I’ve managed to produce what I think is a pretty good model and have now moved on to trying to texture the model. Even in max my experience with this side of things was pretty slim, so I’ve done a truly epic amount of reading and have been playing about in maya for two weeks. I have been creating almost anything I could think of, just so I could familiarise myself with how texturing works in maya, and I have also had a play with mental ray shaders and some different render options.

So this week I tried to move on to creating the specific look I want for my model, and I feel like I just can’t get it working. I am trying to create something similar to the look in the Star Wars: clone wars series. I love the almost relaxed cartoony style, which doesn’t stop you from identifying materials from what they are, but at the same time is a long way from realistically portraying metal etc.

Does anyone have any advice on how I might achieve that kind of look and feel?

Here is in image of the look I want to try to create.

I don’t think they’re doing anything much more than hand painting their textures, and using very few if any photo textures. Could you post what you’ve been working on? If we see where you’re at, we can probably give you good advice on how to push your work more in the direction of your reference material.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

I’ll get something posted up tomorrow so you can see where I am, I’m a little worried that my ability to do the hand painting side of things is going to let me down a bit…all of my experience is limited to reference images or photos.

I guess I’ll have to sit down and delve into photoshop and try to work on that side of things.

watching the simplicity of the materials on the picture I think you can do desired materials even without any textures but just by playing with the materials…
