stroke snapping question

#1

hey, I checked around for this but since I don’t know if the option exists it’s hard getting an answer thus far.

I know you can use the v-tool for straight line strokes, but is there a way to change the shift+stroke orientation of the freehand tool to match your screen’s orientation and not your canvas? Basically, I want vertical lines to always be up and down on my screen, and horizontal lines to always be left and right, this way I can rotate my page and hit those smaller angles.

The reason behind it is I like the way freehand strokes look, where the v-tool blocks in the entire stroke as if you went back and forth until it was 100% all the way across.

Thanks to anybody who can give me a definitive answer!

I think the answer is no but I’m not 100% on this. Have you tried Aligning Stroke to Path? Draw a path with the Pen Tool and click the Align to Path button and then your freehand stroke will draw on the path but without the mechanical appearance you’re trying to avoid.

Poked around in 9.5 and could not suss a way to do it. Even had a go at seeing if I could find an acceptable hack with perspective grids. Couldn’t. A look at the Painter X features doesn’t show anything that looks like it might do the job.

I’m not sure I really understand the original question, but if I’m guessing correctly, you can set up your regular grid, with spacings to your specs, and use the straight line version of your brush to draw to it.

Joe Paris’s idea is a good one too, also using a grid especially with Snap to grid turned on. In Painter 10, you can create a path using the straight line path pen and draw the lines you want. Using the Align to path option on your brush control bar, you can draw direcly over the path and be totally accurate as to following the lines.

Being as the the line image you drew with the brush is a new layer you can modify it with any of the effects available to a layer. Actually you can do the same with the path you drew with the pen before you used the brush, with even more controls available. Just remember to highlight it in the layers palette before you use the brush.
