Strangest thing in art

#1

Hey folks

I am not Picasso, that’s for sure but i know a litle something.

This thing has always been bugging me.I have been studying figure drawing and anatomy stuff for 2 years already. What amazes me is that how much more respect goes to “THE OLD MASTERS” or nowdays the already established artists. If you see one figure drawing and they tell you some beginner guy did it,even though it might be ok you won’t think of the image with respect and you will start to crutiqe it.But if the same image is shown to you and they tell you it is from Michelangelo then even if the image sucks you would say woooow now this is art … And you will try to figure out why he did the hatching the way he did it and you will come up with all these reasons that might or not be true.

I mean i bought Anatomy lessons from the great masters and to be honest there are some crappy images there that the author has found all these explanations why “the master” did what he did.I have seen lots of other better drawings here on forum then there are some in that book. Most of the drawings are good hell yeah, but some of them really i don’t get.

I respect others opinions, this is just mine and i would love to hear from you artists

Cheers

I think your point is interesting - just because we consider the ‘Old Masters’ as the standard bearers of figurative art does not mean that everything that they did was perfect. Michelangelo in fact destroyed most of his preparatory drawings I suppose in part to shield his work from his competition, but also so as not to have a record of just how much work and effort went into the preparations for his fresco and sculpture projects. While Michelangelo produced the most spectacular figure drawings in the history of art, there are also a myriad of sketches that he left undamaged that bear witness to his thought process rather than to his technical skill. All artists begin their initial thought processes with sketches, which should not be compared with their final drawings, which we see and admire.

It’s sort of the equivalent of seeing a star without their makeup, I suppose.

the drawings are like blueprints for the masterpieces. i mean we initially have ideas and we sort of jot it down so as not to be forgotten (or in our case make a quick sketch.) then from there, we then ‘mold’ it into the final visual work we really envisioned. so i guess its pretty normal that some of the drawings are questionable when we talked about their works merely because those are the ‘masters’ initial ideas before coming out with their masterpieces.
