Strange Maya Ascii files from modo

#1

Hi,
Iv been having a bit of trouble trying to view objects saved in this format from modo, in maya 6.
The main object and its morphtargets are imported into maya, so it seems, but are invisible and I can’t make them visible.
Any clues?

Exported blendshapes and sub-poly texturing don’t mix. You just have to assign a shader to the base object in Maya.

I had this same problem at work last week, but there weren’t any blendshapes involved. Is it perhapse just a sub-d issue? Once I found the solution I never did investigate the cause.

Thanks,
Brad

I’m having a lot of problems with .MA files as well… :frowning:

I’ll have a 200 poly model with 3 surfaces assigned, and when I bring it into maya, it will complain that there was an error reading the file. The model is completely normal. No weighting, no subDs, nothing.

Plus, it’s so incredibly huge that it cannot be displayed even remotely. I’ll have to scale it to 0.001 of it’s original size in order to get it in a somewhat usable size, and that’s when I’ll find out that all of the surfaces have been deleted, and I have to SEPERATE the model to get even the polygons to draw. (it’s stuck in wireframe mode, even though i’m in shaded, and the only way to fix that is to SEPERATE the model.)

…and this is the same result I get with any model I’ve tried loading into maya so far. (those that I actually can get in, btw… I tried saving out a couple of 30K+ poly models to .MA, and it hung for about ten minutes and so I had to shut down MODO every time.)

It’s hard to say without seeing the file. You will get some warnings if export a model that has both blend shapes and multiple textures.

Only the control cage is tranfered. You can either convert it to sub-d or poly smooth it.

1m in modo translates to 1m in Maya. Odds are you have the default units in Maya set to centimeters.

Their is a speed issue with the PC exporter. It’s an issue with one of the standard Microsoft libraries. I’ve isolated it and will see about getting an update out.

Thanks for the reply Griffon, that did it.
I was going to add my concerns about a few texture problems I was having in the export as well but obviously your on the ball with this aswell.
I hope This exporter gets a lot of attention in the modo updates, right now since 1.02 it is the best modeling companion to maya that Iv used so far.
Thanks.

Ahhhh… Thanks Griffon… I changed the maya prefs to use meters as default, and the objects were coming in properly scaled.

I also applied only one surface (texture) to the model and it came in with no errors and was drawing properly…

The surface(s) don’t bring their COLOR texture(s) with it though, whether there’s only one surface or more…
