Well my first challenge… wahoo! This is going to be interesting, and it’s good to have such an interesting topic. Now I put together this quick sketch based on a concept I find strangely strange.

Lifts: Now when everyone walks into a lift they automatically turn to face the doors, but have you ever walked into a lift full of people and stayed facing the same direct as when you walked in? If so, you get a few strange looks from the people around you don’t you?.. If you haven’t done this before you should try it next time you’re in a lift.

Anyway that is what I am centering my sketch around. I am aiming for a lift full of straight faced, uptight, no-nonsense businessmen who are following the ‘norm’ of facing the door except for one rebel…

So thats my idea so far, I want to play around with some other concepts as well but this is one that has stuck with me for a bit (thanks for the idea Maria!)

hey ZaneV

I find your idea very interesting: it seems people in particular regions behave very different, from my experiences I noticed, what you pointed out it is usually spotted in the U.S. but in Europe, people in the lifts - mostly take their places facing each other around the empty middle of the cabin (well, in Germany, Switzerland and Poland at least). Not sure why. Is it beacuse of good manners not to turn the back to someones face? Or a feeling of insecurity having a stranger behind the back? Or just easier to start a talk while traveling

Maybe one of these could explain the bahaviour of your rebel, surely a strange in this situation!

Keep it up!

Thanks for the comment Senticus, and you are right with the point that some countries or regions wouldn’t see this as a really strange behavior.

Well I have had a number of other ideas and I want something that is simply weird that people can’t really ponder over and think: ‘Well technically, if…’ so I happened upon (in my wild and frenzied sketching) a drumming octopus which I named an Octo-beat-o-pus. Now I have not settled on this sketch as the final angle of the illustration because I want to show the complete drum kit as well or at least part of it. Now something that may need clearing up with the sketch above is that the think that he has his tentacle on is actually the foot pedal for the bass drum and now looking at it I realize he hasn’t got a tentacle on the hi-hat pedal either which I will fix up later. Oh and that thing on his head is a set of headphones…

Well that pretty much sums up this concept… comments welcome!
