Latest Update: Final Image: feelings of a golfball

#2

Hi folks!

I finally decided to take part here  I was not quiet sure if i find the time to join, but …here i am

My Topic is: Feelings of a Golfball
How is it behaving? How does it feel being hit all the time, forced into tiny holes all day long? Is this fun for it? Is it enjoying flying around the cort or…does a life of a Golfball just simply suck?

The idea came to me when i was golfing with my fahter on a wonderful mountain-golf cort of austria. I’m a complete newbie to golf so i was wondering how my golfball’s feeling are, knowing a complete beginner plays it,…with no control and no skills. Whish that in my mind i startet figuring out how to get this idea on a picture.

Let me know what you guys thing about it! Feel free to ask questions or crit my work.
Thanks in advance!

cya all!
Philipp

First of all i did a concept sketch in Photoshop. Quick, only to get a idea which direction i want to go. For me, it was clear that the golfball is pissed being hit around a golfcort and forced into litle black holes all the time. I wanted to use grayscale for the picture to underline that emotion it’s got. Desaturated, a bit of resigned moode. I also wanted to get that (as good as for me possible) into his facial expression.

Here you can see some wires of my scene. I changed the orientation of the golf club, because it was wrong for a righthander. The club itself is boxmodeling in C4D with a hypernurb object on top of it to smooth it and make it look more round. Also the other parts of the image, the tee, the grass was made with C4D. Only the Golfball has been modeled brushbased (sculpting) and was then brought back into C4D. All in all the Scene is not very optimized. For my taste, the ball is too dense, and the grass made out of polys is i think not the best way to do it. But it works like i want it to…so i don’t think i will change anything.

My first (and for myself very near to what i wantet to achiev) 3D illustration was made in a few weeks during sparetime.

Texturing
The textures are all procedural, except the one for the eyes of the golfball. This one was handpainted in PS. The shader which is on the golfball is also procedural with SLA and, what was new for me and very funny to play with, subpolygondisplacement for the special golf ball surface. Some scratches and mud, and here we are. The club is textured with a basic metal shader (danel, anisotropic) and with SLA Tiles for the structure where the ball gets hit. The tee and grass was not very difficult, just some plastic and some color variations, all procedural.

Lighting
The scene was lit with a few spotlights. One from the right as key light, two as fill lights from left, and one as rim from behind (which you can’t see anymore because of the golf club) I also placed a area light on the ground to simulate bounced light reflected form the grass.
Some Ambiente Occlusion gave everything the finishing touch.

Rendering
Took me about half an hour to render everything (because of so much geometry, i know i should change that…G) Another part which inreased the rendertime was that i use subpolygon displacement for the golfballs surface structure. And, the grass is full polybased…another renderkiller…and ambiente occlusion, not to forget. Last but not least the blurry reflections and a bit depth of field is slowing down also. I know this is not very optimized G)

Postwork
Some last tweaks in PS were made. Desaturating the image to get the greyscale look, a filmgrain filter on top of it, some level and contrast adjustments and here we are

i know i kept everything very simple and i also know that it is not a very outstanding or very difficult-to-create picture. But for me, it was fun, and if i can only make one of you laugh, i achived what i wanted

greets!

Hey Philipp, really cool image, i like a lot and the texture for the golf ball is nice man!!
I think the golf ball concept have a many posibilities. In your image the behavior of the ball is logic and no strange ( and more if Tiger Woods is the hiter  ) , only a comment. I really like the style and touch of your image. Best of luck!!
