Strange Behavior (Illustration) Entry: Kathleen Pittman
I’ve been watching these challenges for years now. I always wanted to enter, but never had the time. I graduated with my BS in Animation in December and now I am ready! I’m wracking my brain for a concept that will excite me. Love, love, love the subject of this challenge! I can’t wait to get started. There are so many talented artists here and I am honored to participate in this challenge with you all
Concept- venus flytraps with a taste for venuses instead of flies.
Created in Illustrator and Photoshop.
I am planning to execute this scene in 3D Studio Max.
I’m pretty happy with the general idea of this concept, so I’m going to start modeling. I think it is the type of scene that will benefit from little details, so as I think of them I may add more.
Next step: model, model, model!
I have to model 2 female forms. Thankfully, the torsos and heads are similar enough that I can probably get away with reusing one model and modifying it.
I’m going for a stylised, brightly colored but semi realisticly textured image.
Comments and crits welcome!
very different … I like it! This 2d concept works nicely as a piece of its own…I am sure the 3d version will turn out great… good luck!
Thanks! I’m working on modeling the face of the Venus de Milo. It is such a recognizeable face I want to get it right. Should have something to show soon.
I’ve begun working on the face for the Venus de Milo statue. I’m trying to capture the likeness of the statue. Still a few issues here, but it is coming along. I don’t want to get hung up on the face too long- I think the body will be a much bigger challenge for me.
This is the symmetrical body that I will modify to make the 2 female figures in the image. In Photoshop, I made an image of the Venus de Milo as symmetrical as I could. I’ve been modeling since then. This has been pretty challenging for me and there are still some areas that need work, but I just wanted to update so you’d know I haven’t given up
Very funny title, are you going to continue this. The modelling is good but I think the title on it’s own is worth finishing the project for, just to have the finished piece named that in your work portfolio.
Thanks for the comments guys.
Yes I do plan to continue this, I’ve just been bogged down with other things. Very busy doing a lot of 3D at work makes it hard to go home and work some more! But I do want to finish, just might not happen in time for the contest. But I’ll try.
I have done some more work on the Venus de Milo, was planning to post when I’m finished modeling her.
Thanks again for replying
That’s a gorgeous idea, Kathleen!
And very nice, clean and well shaped modeling. This is going to be very nice.
Good luck!
Thank you!
I really appreciate the comments the last few days
It inspires me not to give up. I hope to post progress very soon!
Some venus fly traps to be used as extras along the left side. Background is just a gradient- thinking about colors.
I’m trying to decide whether to use the real Venus De Milo’s facial expression or to go for something different, like shocked/surprised. Right now I’m leaning toward the shocked expression.
What do you think? Regular expression or shocked expression?
Hi Kathleen,
Face and plant elements are looking good ![]()
About the expression. I would probably go with the shocked-surprized, but I would rework it to be more extreme and more classical looking. And it still should be pretty :).
You can look on theese pages, may be you can find something sutable here.
