Strange Behavior (Illustration) Entry: Jason Gardiner

This is boris finally put together, this image will be seen in a mirror on boris’s workbench. Not sure how i’m going to go about doing it yet. But i’m sure I will work things out. This render took 35 minutes in V-ray, an ambient occlusion pass and finally compiled in Photoshop.

BTW thanks a million for the positive comments, makes me want to finish this even more!

I have added some more detail to Boris, including giving him arms, a workbench and some wiring. I am comtemplating rendering the background seperately and putting them together in photoshop. I also scaled down the hand as it was way to big in the previous image.

Hey Jason, Boris is great!! I like a lot !! perhaps you need a down- up camera take, to see better the hand putting one finger in to the Boris´s nose, only a comment  Great work my friend!!

ferx: Thanks mate for the suggestion of the camera angle change. I might just have to give that a go. I’ve learnt one thing from all this so far. And that is my strength lies in hard surface modelling. Wish my HMC#10 entry looked like this one is…oh well.

I have decided the background will be modelled in seperately once I learn how to use alpha maps in photoshop.

This is my preliminary work on the background. It’s supposed to look like old industrial style fuse / junction boxes. I found a few references and based the designs on them. this will be going to photoshop for a lot of work. This was modelled in 3D max, some textures were done with Quickdirt and finally rendered with V-ray. Render took 25 minutes.

Yep that is good hard modeling. I am not sure that the whole nose picking scenario reads that well, maybe the robot head could be a little more human looking? At a glance his face looks like a pipe assembly right now. But the nose picking is definitely funny. Those vacuum tubes rock.

This is the background after I edited it in photoshop. Mainly I wanted a sepia toned effect so the background would appear nuetral, so not to detract from the main scene. I also blurred the image to add depth of field to the final image, which I have composited and just in process of touching up a few bits.
And I thought I was never going to get this scene done!

Your modelling is excellend, your idea is well thougt out, i love the steampunk feel. My only issue is with your robot’s head. i think it would be served by more emotive eyes… at the very least. you’re trying to have a comical feel and for that the face’s ability to emotr is important.

This is Boris composited with the background. I also rotated the hand around to better show it off as nearly 20 hours of modelling went into that hand! This render (which is a lot bigger than this image) took 6.5 hours to render with GI enabled using V-ray. Background took about 5 hours to model and render. For now this is my final but i’m leaving it open (not submitted as final work) because I may still do something with the eyes. But at the moment i’m wanting to start my next work which will be a steampunk marlin submarine in drydock.

Coming togheter nice, rock on!

Some very nice mechanicks rendering you have here!
Good work!

Thanks a ton for the positive comments! Had a lot of dramas just recently so that’s why I haven’t updated recently. My crappy old P4 2.4ghz system literally went into meltdown, got a massive surge caused by a faulty power supply that cooked my m/board, processor, RAM and hard drives. luckily I had all my essential stuff backed up on a 500gb external drive (which escaped the surge) My old system was a total write off as I was only able to scrounge that case and both optical drives. Thanks a billion to my mum and dad who bought me a wicked new dual core system with 2 gb RAM and Nvidia 8500GT vid card. I should be back modelling once I get the systemn fully set up…cheers

mad rendering skill man. great eye for detail.

keep it up !

I wasn’t happy with the Dalek like eyes Boris had so I remodelled them to try and look a bit more human. I have my final scene ready for it’s big render which I will be doing tonight, should be a good test for my new dual core system.

Well Finally it’s done! Now I can move onto my next project which I have been wanting to start for a while now.
I probably spent about 100 hours on Boris including, modeling, material creation, texture maps and lighting.
The eyes were redesigned at the last minute to try and give some emotion to the robotic construct.
I used a few textures from CGtextures.com in the background so credits to the site owner for some wicked textures.
Also would like to thank everyone for their encouragement and support, not too mention some interesting ideas as well.

Boris depicts an industrial robot who has a distinctly human trait, normally seen being carried out by middle aged men at the traffic lights. Boris enjoys nothing more than having a good old pick of his brassy nose much to the disdain of his supervisors and fellow robots.

Oh, so you are done … Gratz!
I have to finish my work to, but it’s hard to deside when you are done.

Nice image, well done and good luck!
