Latest Update: Final Image: Boris the brass nose picker - final render

#2

This is my first WIP image of a clockwork hand, that has so far taken me about 15 hours.

Hey Jason,

Welcome to the challenge!

Good modeling here! What is the idea behind it? You say something about clock?

Good luck!

#4

very good design specially those details. will this be a robot clock or something?

#5

Thanks for the positive comments guys and sorry for not explaining my piece in proper. This is the start of what I will be calling “Boris the brass nose picker” a male clockwork android who has picked up the human trait of picking his nose. I am tossing up between having him sitting in some sort of vehicle and having a pick (much like you see people do in real life!) or having him against a simple background. I’ll see how things develop anyway.

#6

You should have him in a scene, where he’s tied himself in chaines and ropes, trying to desperately stop his habit. I can imagine one of his hands going for the nose, whilst the other is trying to stop it. Make it really dark, it should be good

The work on Boris’s hand is progressing nicely. I left out the internal gears on this render, so you can see the wiring that I have put inside. this hand is probably the most detailed thing I have made to date. G’day Yav! great to see you here and that’s a wicked idea.
Hand model so far has taken about 20 hours in 3D max 8.0

good modelling so far mate …

sounds quite an intriguing project …

I was going to enter this but i really cant think of anything to do … maybe something will come to me in the next couple of weeks …

This is my first proper attempt at doing something in Zbrush! I poly-modelled the wrist in MAX and wanted it to appear a bit worn. I am still learning Zbrush so Ii may take a bit longer before I can make this into displacement maps for use in 3D max.

This is just a preliminary materials test using some Vray materials, I rendered an occlusion pass seperately and then altered it’s contrast in Photoshop. I composited in 2 dirt / shadow layers, but still need to add more dirt and scratches to the brass and the clear plexiglass on the hand. Am hoping to have the hand and lower arm completed sometime this week.

Trying to learn new tools as well as take part in a challenge is a bit tricky, to say the least. I thought my Vray materials looked too “shiny” and plasticy so I have opted to use the Maxwell render engine for this challenge. The thing I like about maxwell is the ability to stop & start renders and the amazing effects it does with just one light emitter. This was only rendered for 45 minutes. The wrist area needs more work as i’m not too fond of the checkerplate pattern.

#12

This is my early modelling work on Boris’s head. Still a lot more detail to add.
I’m thinking of compositing this image ro make renders a bit more time friendly. Especially with Maxwell.

#13

Very nice modelling so far.

Good luck with the challenge.

I know it’s been a long time since I updated this! SO with 54 days to go it’s time to get into gear and get my scene finished. This is a Vray render of a vacumn valve I completed today. These valves are easily found in vintage radio gear. Which is what my robot, Boris is working on in the scene. I will be making about 5-6 different valves though I will be tweaking some materials as this image took 1 hour to render with V-ray.

#15

Nice concept and great modelling

I`m looking forward to see the next steps :bounce:
Good luck!

#16

Hey Jason, cool models mate!! I like a lot your clockwise hand, really great model! Looking forward for more updates!!

#17

This is my WIP render for the foreground objects. Since doing this render I am thinking of redoing the whole layout of the image I was going to use. I’m thinking of showing Boris’s workspace (in a radio factory) and having a small mirror that will have a reflection of boris picking his nose in it. Still have lots more to do!

#18

And the idea is fun. Like your textures to, you have the skill!
Saw that beautiful AT-ST model in your gallery. Can I have it for my entry  (joke).

Good luck!

Hey Jason, awesome valves, and incredible dial box !! great man!! I think your idea of a robot on antique style is cool !! ( i ever liked the futuristic style using antique things with modern use  ). I dont know if you can post a rough sketch about your overall idea and composition, for now is difficult to give a global opinion of your idea. For the models, is great mate!!

Nice models. I really like the finish. Looking forward to watching this one fill out.
